Summary:

EffectiveJuly 1 2025 the Department of Biology ( VCU Life Sciences ( merge to form the School of Life Sciences and Sustainability (SLSS) to behoused within the VCU College of Humanities and Sciences ( includes more than 60 full-time faculty and 14 staff supportingundergraduate and graduate programs in Biology Bioinformatics EnvironmentalStudies and Integrative Life Sciences. We are currently recruiting key staffto support the operations of this new academic unit including the position of Assistant Building Manager and LaboratorySafety Coordinator. This position will be responsible for serving asassistant building manager maintenance of teaching laboratories andlaboratory safety management.

Job-Specific Duties

Responsibilitiesinclude but are not limited to:

Assistant to the Building Manager (40%)
Supportsand assists the Building Manager in the maintenance of the building facilitiesand equipment including multi-user equipment rooms walk-in warm and coldrooms a greenhouse aquatics facility and instructional-related in receiving and installing equipment as well as moving equipment fromlab to lab in accordance with university safety and operation guidelines. In coordinationwith the building manager surplus items. Maintains inventory of lab equipmentand university fixed assets.

Maintenance of teaching laboratories (25%)
Coordinatesthe use repair maintenance and annual service of teaching equipment such asmicroscopes micropipettes and other equipment. Maintains an inventory ofequipment chemicals (including expiration dates and storage conditions) andPPE in all teaching laboratories. Maintains prep room(s) for teachinglaboratories. Collaborate with faculty and lab coordinators to allocateresources such as lab space equipment and materials efficiently to supportteaching activities.

Ensuressafety and compliance of all teaching laboratories. Serves as Chemical HygieneOfficer for all teaching laboratories. Arranges annual lab inspections incoordination with faculty lab coordinators. Supervisesdisposal and satellite waste accumulation areas for chemicals in lab courses.

Laboratory safety management (25%)
Conductsmonthly/quarterly safety audits and assessments of all laboratories (teachingand research) and shared facilities to ensure compliance with universitystate and federal safety regulations. Maintains detailed records of safetyinspections and maintenance activities and generates reports for thedepartment and university administration as needed. Completes VCU OEHS trainingas required to stay up to date on chemical hygiene procedures and laboratory safetyprotocols. Inspects eyewashes and safety equipment in all teaching and researchlaboratories. Assist faculty in the development and implementation of labemergency response plans including evacuation procedures and communicationplans for lab personnel during emergencies.

Miscellaneous Duties (10%)
Theposition involves helping the department with all facilities-related tasks tohelp maintain a safe and healthy work environment for building tenants. Otherduties may be assigned as needed to support the departments instructional andresearch mission.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Experience using basic lab equipment used in teaching and research labs; this includes significant knowledge of the installation use and maintenance of equipment and troubleshooting of potential issues affecting the equipment
Familiar with Safety and Risk Management policies and procedures to support an environment free of chemical and biological hazards
Proficient in MS Office Excel and university-related programs
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect professionalism and civility with a population of faculty staff and students from various backgrounds and experiences or a commitment to do so as a member of VCU.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to efficiently handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Ability to interpret and apply complex safety regulations
Possess a general knowledge of chemical safety
Demonstrated record of responsibility and dependability
Significant experience in a similar role

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Biology or a similar field
Knowledge of the general organization and operation of SLSS College or University
Previous experience in a similar higher education environment
