Tech and Build Manager The Queen Marys Dark Harbor

Seasonal Position: June 1 November 30

Position Summary

The Tech and Build Manager is the operational leader responsible for the end-to-end management of the build operation and breakdown of The Queen Marys Dark Harbor event. This role is focused exclusively on Dark Harbor and is not responsible for other sites. The ideal candidate is a proven manager who excels at leading teams solving complex problems on the fly and adapting to rapidly changing circumstancesincluding weather threats and logistical delays.

This position is located on-site at the Queen Mary in Long Beach for the duration of the run it requires a hands-on leader with both technical proficiency and exceptional people management skills capable of motivating crews collaborating with vendors and ensuring the event is delivered safely on time and on budget. During the event run the Tech and Build Manager is responsible for leading the tech team and promptly addressing any build or technical issues that may arise. This includes providing hands-on support to resolve unexpected problems ensuring seamless event operations and maintaining clear communication with all team members to troubleshoot and adapt in real time.

Key Responsibilities

Build and Breakdown Management

  • Oversee all phases of the build operation and breakdown of the event site ensuring seamless transitions between each stage.
  • Manage load-in and load-out schedules coordinating with internal teams and external vendors to optimize efficiency and minimize downtime.
  • Supervise the integration of technical elementsincluding lighting sound and special effectswhile ensuring all scenic and structural builds meet safety and quality standards.

Team Leadership and Crew Management

  • Recruit hire train and manage a seasonal build crew of 20 builders technicians and laborers.
  • Motivate and mentor the team fostering a culture of accountability safety and continuous improvement.
  • Delegate tasks effectively monitor performance and provide clear direction to ensure all crew members are aligned with project goals and timeline.s

Vendor Relations

  • Oversee relationships with specialty vendors and contractors (e.g. sound lighting special effects) ensuring timely delivery and installation of all outsourced elements.
  • Communicate expectations coordinate schedules and resolve conflicts or issues that arise during the build and breakdown phases.

Operational Problem Solving and Adaptability

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for on-site problem solving responding quickly and effectively to unforeseen challenges such as weather disruptions equipment failures or logistical setbacks.
  • Adapt plans and pivot resources in real time to maintain project momentum and meet critical deadlines.

Technical Oversight

  • Ensure proficient use of hand tools and basic building techniques across the crew.
  • Oversee technical operations maintenance and repairs during the event season ensuring all systems function at peak performance.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with the Creative Director and General Manager to translate creative visions into operational reality balancing artistic intent with logistical feasibility.
  • Maintain open communication with all stakeholders providing regular updates on progress challenges and solutions.

Safety and Compliance

  • Enforce rigorous safety protocols and industry best practices throughout all project phases.
  • Ensure compliance with local regulations and company standards maintaining a safe environment for staff and guests.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience managing large-scale event builds preferably as a Technical Director Technical Manager or similar leadership role in live entertainment or themed attractions

  • Demonstrated ability to lead motivate and manage crews of 20 people in high-pressure deadline-driven environments.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances and real-time challenges

  • Experience managing vendor relationships and coordinating with contractors for specialized technical elements

  • Proficient with hand tools and basic building practices.

  • Excellent communication project management and leadership skills.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours including nights and weekends throughout the event season.
