Job Description

George Fox Universitys Residence Life Department is seeking a compassionate leader to join their team as an Area Coordinator and function as part of a team responsible for the overall strategic coordination of student success and universitywide retention efforts.


About the Job:

The Area Coordinator (AC) position is a livein 10 month position in our Residence Life Department. Under the supervision and guidance of the Director of Residence Life ACs play a critical role within the residential community as mentors advisors and cocurricular educators for Resident Assistants (RAs) Assistant Area Coordinators (AACs) and residents helping to deliver our Be Known Promise to all students at George Fox.

As a Christcentered community Residence Life at George Fox is committed to a culture of civility respect and inclusivity amidst the everincreasing chaos surrounding our students. As a department we value diversity in our student leaders. It is imperative that the Area Coordinator recognizes and appreciates the multitude of people and perspectives that exist in our work including racially/ethnically marginalized students dominant culture students firstgeneration students and international students. The AC functions as part of a team responsible for the overall strategic coordination of student success and universitywide retention efforts through fulfillment of this mission.


Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Affirming the centrality and applicability of your Christian faith through behavior and expression of values and ideals which are the embodiment of that faith as well as the mission goals and Christian foundation of George Fox University.
  • Demonstrating support for the philosophy of Student Life the programs of Residence Life and the Community Accountability expectations as outlined in the Student Handbook along with a willingness to become involved with RAs residents and their developmental processing as a cocurricular educator at George Fox University.
  • Providing experiences training and information to RAs which will promote their identity leadership and faith development as well as interpersonal competencies.
  • Reviewing RAs progress toward goals; provide support guidance and redefinition of those goals.
  • Meeting with RAs individually and as a team each week to disseminate information provide training experiences foster personal and professional growth and develop a sense of team cohesiveness and vision.
  • Supporting RA staff in their oncall responsibilities including developing the RA oncall rotation schedule.
  • Serving as a resource and support to students in a designated residential area.
    • Developing and maintaining a residential environment that helps create a sense of belonging and equitable participation of all groups while modeling ways to acknowledge and critically address issues of oppression privilege and power.
    • Actively confronting and addressing issues of intolerance or bias that may arise within the community.
    • Developing area programming to achieve student success and retention.
    • Assisting the residents in resolving conflict with others through providing guidance on how to resolve conflicts peacefully and respectfully and referring conflicts to appropriate staff members as needed.
    • Initiating and following appropriate institutional crises intervention responses and processes in a timely manner.
  • Serving as an essential member of the Residence Life team.
    • Attending and participating in weekly Residence Life orientations training sessions and meetings as convened by the Director of Residence Life.
    • Responding to violations of lifestyle standards community policies and other aspects of being a member of the George Fox community.
    • Reporting Title IX incidents to immediate supervisor in a timely manner.
    • Partnering with other members of the Residence Life Team to facilitate and develop training in August and January for Residence Life.
  • Completing applicable administrative responsibilities.
    • Overseeing the checkin/checkout procedures for a specific residential area.
    • Overseeing the budget including area programming and staff training and development.
    • Coordinating room changes and room assignments with the Housing Office.
    • Conducting routine inspections of the residential area under their care and promptly reporting any damages and/or vandalism using the work order system; promptly reporting all maintenance needs via work order system.
    • Participating in the Residence Life staff recruitment hiring and Residence Life program evaluations; complete evaluations reports and forms as requested by the Director of Residence Life.
    • Observing all University policies related to conduct and confidentiality i.e. Code of Ethics FERPA.
  • Communicating effectively and courteously with others including employees students and the public in a spirit of teamwork respect and customer service.
  • By actions words and lifestyle be a Christian role model to students whether through casual contact or in a formal supervisory role.
  • Demonstrating awareness respect and appreciation for diversity of culture background race sex political views expressions of faith etc. and works well with a variety of people.

A day in the life of this position:

The Area Coordinator will include much variety! A typical day could include hosting one on one meetings with RAs attending Pro staff meetings conducting general admin responsibilities (planning staff meetings or developing events) walking the residence halls and/or responding to needs as they arise.

  • Experience with StarRez and Vena database entry.
  • StrengthsFinder experience.
  • The ability to speak more than one language; Spanish preferred.
  • Masters Degree in Higher Education Student Development or other related field.

Job information:

  • Hours Per Week: 40 hours per week 10 months of the year (0.83 FTE)
  • Work Period: July 15th through May 15th
  • Primary Work Location: Newberg Campus
  • Working Conditions: Physical requirements are those of a normal office environment. Must have the ability to lift more than 25 pounds and perform any activities such as balancing bending/stooping climbing stairs crouching etc.
