Job Description

Title of the position: Cheer Team Coach

General Description

The role of the Cheerleading Coach is to teach the cheerleading squad to promote school spirit and encouragement of athletic teams. Detroit Cristo Rey High School sees the role of the Cheerleading Coach as being someone who in addition to having a high level of knowledge in coaching the sport of cheerleading can teach and model all the aspects of the DCR Profile at Graduation. Ideally it will be someone who can coach our students in a highly competitive sport yet help them keep a balance in all aspects of their lives spiritually socially mentally and physically. A cheerleader promotes school spirit school pride and encourages the members of the athletic teams. Their involvement and enthusiasm in the DCR community helps other students feel a part of the community. Promoting positive teamwork positive interactions amongst teammates (and all levels of the program) modeling sportsmanship and fan involvement at games and pep assemblies are viewed as important aspects of being a cheerleader. This position requires the coach to have CPR/First Aid certification.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Communicate frequently with Athletic Director and Dean of Students/Activities
  • Maintain a physically safe practice environment and plan effective practices
  • Maintain cheerleading budget
  • Distribute monthly calendar to cheerleaders and parents
  • Maintain daily attendance for cheerleaders
  • Be aware of cheerleaders school attendance and grades
  • Coordinate teambuilding/bonding activities
  • Instruct players in the rules regulations equipment and techniques of the game of volleyball
  • Organize and direct individual and small group practice activities/exercises
  • Assess players skills monitor players during competition and practice and keep the Athletic Director informed of the athletic performance of students
  • Develop and execute winning game strategies
  • Follow established procedures in the event of an athletes injury
  • Model sportslike behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards players parents officials and spectators.
  • Maintain the volleyball equipment storage in an orderly condition and assume responsibility for its security
  • Distribute equipment supplies and uniforms to players
  • Submit a list of award winners at the end of the season to Athletic Director
  • Participate in special activities to include parents night banquet award nights and pep assemblies
  • Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities
  • Monitor student athletes eligibility throughout the season and enforce compliance to policy
  • Report all emergencies and injuries to Athletic Director

Before Tryouts

  • Schedule dates for summer camp and practices
  • Schedule a date for uniform fitting
  • Schedule dates for pre and for posttryout informational/parent meeting
  • Create handouts of rules for the season upcoming dates daily doubles camp schedule tryout criteria and other information about the upcoming season.

Schedule a date for tryouts for 1 week in April or May. (Scheduling should occur after spring sports practices)

  • Determine tryout criteria.

Tryouts:

Hold tryouts in an organized manner by teaching material at the beginning so students have time to learn it.

  • Inform students at the beginning of tryouts as to how they will learn if they made the team

Summer:

Conduct some summer practices and conditioning

  • Coordinate with Athletic Director regarding uniform and practice gear needs
  • Send letter home to parents regarding practice gear requirements and uniform requirements
  • Give out summer pre and post camp workouts to stay in shape for daily doubles.
  • Prepare materials for daily doubles and organize the upcoming season.
  • Attend cheer camp with the cheer leaders.

August:

  • During daily doubles teach the material/stunts that will be used during the following season. Arrange bus transportation with the Athletic Director to travel to away games.

Fall Season:

  • Attend designated JV and Varsity games (home and away) to supervise the cheerleaders.
  • Maintain contact with parents and volunteer group as to what events are next.
  • Arrange bus transportation with the Athletic Doirector to travel to away games.
  • Attend selected soccer and volleyball playoff games.

Winter Season:

Attend designated mens and womens JV and Varsity basketball games to supervise cheerleaders.

  • Present cheerleaders with awards and varsity letters.
  • Collect and inventory cheer uniforms.

Other Functions

  • Attend staff development meetings clinics and other professional activities to improve coaching performance
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director Principal or other appropriate administrator
