The Role

As a Global Development Policy Advisor youll be integral to our work in helping vulnerable children achieve a brighter future. You will advance Save the Childrens overall policy and advocacy strategy across specified thematic areas in global development. In this capacity the Advisor will work closely with the Managing Director Global Development Policy to lead the development and implementation of legislative and advocacy strategies targeting Congress and the U.S. Administration on global development policy including advocacy on the federal budget and congressional appropriations. The initial issue focus will be food security and nutrition. You will also contribute to the overall capacity and effectiveness of the Government Relations department and Policy Advocacy and Campaigns division.

What Youll Be Doing (Essential Duties)*

Lead the development and implementation of global development policy issues with an initial focus on global food security and nutrition (50%)

  • Develop and execute a strategy to advance and achieve global development policy and advocacy goals.
  • Develop and execute legislative strategy as needed.
  • Conduct synthesize and share policy research and analysis.
  • Monitor and track legislative and Administration policy developments and develop response strategies.
  • Research and develop educational materials for congressional and Administration targets on priority global development issues as needed.
  • Develop external advocacy products including fact sheets and policy briefs and contribute to advocacyfocused media/press materials digital advocacy social media or products/language for use in grassroots engagement.

Manage external relationships (20%)

  • Identify develop and maintain positive and productive bipartisan and bicameral relationships in Congress with a focus on committees of jurisdiction and leadership.
  • Identify develop and maintain positive and productive relationships with key positions in relevant U.S. federal government agencies.
  • Manage relationships with external organizations and coalitions. Leverage these relationships to advance Save the Childrens global development policy agenda.

Play a strategic leadership internal coordination and cocreation role with relevant SCAN and Save the Children U.S. and Save the Children International departments teams and offices (15%)

  • Work with relevant business teams on thematic issues to gather program information and impact data to strengthen advocacy.
  • Liaise with SCAN to provide policy messaging and other content for grassroots advocacy as needed and requested.
  • Regularly engage with relevant stakeholders across functional teams (media and communications fundraising campaigns etc.) for cocreation and execution of advocacy tactics and activities.
  • Identify gaps and barriers to advancing the global development policy issues agenda and offer solutions.

Provide general political analysis and other tasks as they arise (15%)

  • Collect and share intel on key political developments.
  • Conduct and share analysis of relevant political developments and dynamics relevant to the work of the Government Relations (GR) department and issue portfolio.
  • Contribute to the GR departments biweekly policy updates and serve as issue expert for other departments.
  • Given the everevolving nature of advocacy for children and the need for this position to react to new policies and developments a percentage of time will be required to handle issues as they arise.

Required qualifications for the role

  • Minimum of a bachelors degree or equivalent experience plus at least 5 years of relevant experience
  • Indepth command of the workings of federal government operations and the legislative process
  • Experience working in or with Congressional offices
  • Strong understanding of international development policy
  • Professional experience advancing a policy and legislative agenda
  • Highly professional proactive motivated energetic and wellorganized
  • Ability to adapt advocacy strategy and tactics in the face of challenges
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and solve complex problems
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate successfully with individuals and teams at all levels
  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English

Preferred qualificationsfor the role

  • Strong understanding of global food security and/or nutrition policy
  • Professional experience specifically focused on advancing a policy and legislative agenda related to international development issues
  • Understanding of the federal budget and appropriations process
  • Experience working in coalitions and networks

Compensation

Save the Children is offering the following salary ranges for this position dependent on candidate location:

  • Geo 1 NY Metro DC and other locations with labor costs significantly above national average: Target Salary for this position is $84150 $94050 base salary
  • Geo 2 Locations around the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $76500 $85500 base salary
  • Geo 3 Locations significantly below the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $68850 $76950 base salary

The salary ranges listed above are for US based candidates. For candidates located outside of the US salary ranges will be based on the salary scales of the local employer of record. Actual base salary may vary based on but not limited to relevant experience base salary of internal peers business sector and geographic location (more information on job structure is available here).
