Description

This position is responsible for coordinating communication public relations and marketing for the Leisure Services department.

Major Duties


  • Plans organizes implements and schedules a public information and marketing program.


  • Reviews and determines needs defines goals and recommends steps needed to carry out a planned public information program.


  • Creates daily content and manages department social media and digital initiatives.


  • Creates and designs related promotional and informational materials.


  • Prepares costs estimates and budgets for the public information and marketing program.


  • Works closely with the Information Technology department to coordinate information updates to the citys website.


  • Works closely with department staff to coordinate information updates to the departments online rental and reservation software program.


  • Works closely with the programming division to market and promote programs and special events; works closely with the athletics division to market and promote athletics programs registrations and tournaments.


  • Plans develops and creates the Quarterly Program Guide Yearly Events Calendar brochures flyers and other materials as needed.


  • Writes press releases and coordinates their release with the Community Relations office and the media.


  • Writes and records radio spots television commercials and public service announcements.


  • Serves as department photographer.


  • Communicates with and responds to inquiries from the media and the public regarding department programs and events.


  • Recruits trains and supervises temporary/seasonal/intern staff and volunteers; coordinates staffing and schedules; makes work assignments as needed.

  • Researches and tracks the departments Google analytics social media sites and applications and measures the departments return on investment.


  • Assists department staff with recruiting sponsors to finance various programs and events.


  • Represents the department at various speaking engagements and on boards and committees.


  • Performs related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION


  • Knowledge of public relations principles and practices.


  • Knowledge of journalistic styles.


  • Knowledge of media production communication and dissemination techniques.


  • Knowledge of marketing strategies and techniques.


  • Knowledge of all social media platforms and applications.


  • Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.


  • Knowledge of layout design printing and graphic design and graphic reproduction processes.


  • Skill in the operation of a computer for graphics layout design and everyday applications.


  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.


  • Skill in prioritizing and planning.


  • Skill in interpersonal relations and dealing with the public.


  • Skill in oral and written communication.


  • Ability to communicate clearly through oral and written communication.


  • Ability to collaborate with other employees community groups and media personnel to provide a consistent message when appropriate.


  • Ability to design effective materials to promote the departments programs and services and to package the information in an effective and attractive manner.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS


The Leisure Services Director assigns work in terms of detailed and specific instructions. The supervisor spotchecks work in progress and upon completion for accuracy adequacy and adherence to instructions and established guidelines.


GUIDELINES


Guidelines include specific program city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific.


COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK


  • The work consists of varied specialized public relations communication and marketing duties. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the position.


  • The purpose of this position is to perform communication public relations and marketing for the Leisure Services department. Successful performance in this position contributes to the positive public image of the department and the City of Dothan.


CONTACTS


  • Contacts are typically with coworkers other city personnel members of the media vendors graphic designers local organizations business leaders and members of the general public.


  • Contacts are typically to exchange information negotiate matters resolve problems and provide services.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT


  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting standing stooping or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects up to 50lbs. and may occasionally climb ladders.


  • The work is typically performed in an office various department facilities and/or outdoors occasionally in cold hot or inclement weather. Work may require the use of protective devices such as masks goggles gloves etc.


SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY


This position has direct supervision over volunteer intern and seasonal personnel.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Graduation from an accredited* college or university with a bachelors degree in Marketing Public Relations Mass Communications or closely related field and


  • Six (6) months recent experience in marketing communications public relations or recreation public relations; and


  • Six (6) months recent experience in the use of Adobe Suite Illustrator Photoshop InDesign Microsoft Office Canva or closely related software.


  • Recent (within the last two years) experience as Intern Marketing/Public Relations with the City of Dothan preferred.


  • Possession of a current and valid CPR/AED certification from American Red Cross American Heart and/or another equivalent agencypreferred. The certification must be inperson with handson skills assessment.


*Accredited through an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).



NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Employees in this position are required to obtain/maintain an American Red Cross or American Heart CPR/AED certification within six (6) months of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer. The certification must be inperson with handson skills assessment. (See condition of employment for details.)


  • Possession of a valid driver license and acceptable driving record. (PBA 9/10/01)


  • An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal credit past employment and reference checks.


  • An applicant for this position is subject to a criminal history background check pursuant to the following statutes: 38131. Ala. Code (1975) et seq. as amended by the Child Care Safety Act (Act of Alabama #2018278) Act of Alabamaor 412710 Ala. Code (1975).


  • Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy which includes preemployment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 8/13/12)


  • Must meet the City of Dothans employment physical standard which includes drug/alcohol testing.
