Job Duties

Join the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) where innovation meets infrastructure! We are looking for an Inspector Apprentice to join the Lynchburg DistrictConstruction Team with a drive to improve and maintain infrastructure for the Virginia Department of Transportation. In a training capacity the Inspector Apprentice will inspect phases of highway construction and maintenance projects in order to prepare to assume the duties of a construction inspector and provide a quality transportation system for the traveling public.

Core responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Project Documentation
  • Project Safety and Environmental Compliance
  • Construction and Contract Compliance

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid drivers license.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of highway construction and contracting.
  • Ability to read analyze and interpret construction plans specifications and contract documents.
  • Safety shoes required.
  • Ability to obtain required certifications within 24 months.
  • Knowledge in mathematics e.g. geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in field conditions such as using testing equipment lifting climbing stooping working at heights in confined spaces and making visual observations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with various stakeholders e.g. contractors general public internal and external government agencies.

Additional Considerations

  • Commercial Drivers License.
  • A combination of training experience or education in Construction Engineering Technology Project Management Materials Handling or related field desired.

This position is designated as essential and as such all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather disaster response and emergency operations.
