Job Description

Position Summary

The Network Administrators role is an institutional support position and shall ensure the stable operation of the college networks and the VoIP phone system. The Network Administrator advises the Director of Information Technology on infrastructure and network issues/needs. This includes planning developing installing configuring maintaining securing supporting and optimizing all network/phone hardware software and communication links. The person will also analyze and resolve enduser problems promptly and accurately and provide enduser training where required. Listed below are the primary responsibilities for this position; however the Director of Information Systems and his/her designee may assign other professional duties to meet the Colleges needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Install configure and maintain the institutions LAN/WAN and wireless infrastructure ensuring all network/phonerelated equipment is installed and tested following industry standards and practices.
  2. Monitor network traffic and modify configurations to ensure proper security measures to protect the network from unauthorized access.
  3. Assess and recommend ways to better manage and maintain a network spanning the state of Alabama.
  4. Monitor network performance and recommend upgrades and improvements.
  5. Keep network/phone equipment firmware and software updated.
  6. Provide technical assistance to troubleshoot and resolve enduser problems.
  7. Provide technical training to employees and faculty upon request.
  8. Resolve network problems and provide onsite technical support services as required.
  9. Troubleshoot Active Directory DNS DHCP Group Policy etc.
  10. Flexibility to respond to critical outages of networkrelated equipment outside regular work hours.
  11. Configure and administer changes on phone switches and troubleshoot issues with the phone system.
  12. Establish and maintain adequate procedures to ensure proper backups of device configurations.
  13. Work closely with vendors equipment manufacturers consultants and state agencies to help facilitate networkrelated equipment installation operation and maintenance.
  14. Assist in getting quotes for technical equipment and the procurement process.
  15. Maintain absolute confidentiality of college information.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Information Technology.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  1. Configure implement document and administer layer 2 and 3 IPv4 networks subnets VLANs and peripheral networks to support the ISTC LAN and WAN
  2. Ability to evaluate source and install networking hardware devices
  3. Provide technical helpdesk response for employees
  4. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  5. Handle multiple priorities and tasks at once
  6. Maintain the confidentiality of information and abide by FERPA regulations
  7. Ability to function under pressure and meet deadlines

Qualifications

  1. Minimum Qualifications:
    1. Associates degree from a regionally accredited college or university majoring in computer science information services networking or related field.
    2. Minimum of four (4) years of experience working with network topologies network infrastructure server infrastructure switch configuration and Internetrelated services.
    3. Operational knowledge of network and routing protocols
    4. Working knowledge of Windows Server and Active Directory
    5. Functional understanding of switch configuration and programming
    6. Experience with VoIP phone systems
    7. Ability to communicate information to faculty students and staff in a clear and concise manner
    8. Ability and desire to work as a member of a team
    9. Must be eligible to enter any/all Department of Corrections (DOC) Federal Correctional Institutions (FCI) and Pardons & Paroles Facilities to perform the job duties and maintain this status for continued employment.
    1. Possesses a current valid drivers license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR) that would result in the ability to drive stateowned vehicles.
    1. Preferred Qualifications:
      1. Network CCNA Security or CYSA certifications.
      2. Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited college or university majoring in computer science information services networking or related field.
