The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts.
In Central Shenandoah we proudly serve the counties of Augusta Bath Highland Rockbridge and Rockingham and the cities of Buena Vista Harrisonburg Lexington Staunton and Waynesboro.
The incumbent of this position would direct all medical nursing environmental health administrative and other public health services in the Central Shenandoah Health District. The selected individual would utilize an interdisciplinary staff with efforts directed toward community assessment and health education program design program evaluation resource allocation quality of patient care environmental protection and interagency organization of healthrelated activities. A nonphysician health director shall rely upon a licensed physician on staff if applicable or shall enter into a consulting agreement (MOU/MOA) with a licensed physician for the purpose of executing prescribing duties consulting on clinical matters and carrying out all other State Health Commissioner delegated statutory authority requiring a physician in accordance with the Code of Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications
Considerable professional experience in either a public health agency or a public healthrelated activity
Extensive experience in organizational or community leadership
Demonstrated ability to lead high level teams and manage change in the workplace
Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team
Proven leadership including working in an interdisciplinary environment
Experience managing in a teambased model
Knowledge of a wide range of local public health programs
Ability to work with local with elected officials senior local government officials and community stakeholders; ability to develop partnerships
Experience with budget development execution of financial management and managing grants
Knowledge and application of HR policies including compliance
Experience implementing internal controls
Ability to resolve confidential and sensitive issues maintain confidentiality and maintain balanced professional relationships
Ability to provide communications and media relations
Additional Considerations
MD or DO Board Certified in preventive medicine or a primary care or other appropriate specialty (with Valid Virginia Medical License)
MPH if not used as qualification above
Extensive experience in leading or directing a public health organization
Comprehensive experience and demonstrated skill in administering a broad array of public health programs
Considerable experience working with local state or federal government officials
