36Summary:
The ASCP Certified Phlebotomist performs positive patient identification and the collection of various laboratory specimens on inpatients and outpatients as needed. Receives specimens into the lab reception area inputs specimen information into laboratory information system and conducts patient/client registration as necessary. Makes determinations for specimen collection containers and volumes based on patient weight and performing laboratory. Maintains specimen integrity during specimen collection specimen transport and processing of samples received in the laboratory. Communicates specimen issues to caregiver. Provides customer service by greeting visitors answering the telephone transferring phone calls faxing results and assisting with specimen requirements. Performs other clerical or clinical duties as required by area of service. Patients served at Cook Childrens range in age from newborn through the adolescent period. Every effort will be made to collect specimens in the least traumatic manner to both child and family to include attention to ageappropriate child life issues and pain control techniques. Additionally adults are occasionally served. Specific instructions appear in the procedure manuals. All Laboratory personnel are required to follow Cook Childrens Compliance Policy Code of Conduct and the Clinical Laboratory Compliance Plan. Laboratory and Corporate Compliance as outlined by the OIG and HCFA is an important aspect of our laboratorys environment and each employee is expected to be knowledgeable of and behave in accordance with the Laboratory and Cook Childrens Compliance Plans. These job functions are performed with a professional courteous and knowledgeable manner towards physicians management nurses coworkers and other customers of Cook Childrens Healthcare System.
Qualifications:
ASCP Certification in Phlebotomy required
High School graduate or GED required
Successful completion of formal phlebotomy course: (junior college level) or successful completion of a lab liaison training program or equivalent
Have a minimum of 3 years phlebotomy experience 2 of those 3 years need to be in a diagnostic setting OR 1 year of phlebotomy experience in a pediatric facility
