About the Office of Global Learning

The Office of Global Learning (OGL) is part of the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs (OVPIA). As such we share the mission of developing and supporting global learning activities across the Cornell University community. As a comprehensive international education unit our office helps Cornellians from around the world grow as global learners. Our team coordinates education abroad experiences for Cornell students advises international students and scholars on federal immigration and labor regulations and supports their success.

The Opportunity

The Office of Global Learning is seeking a detailoriented and servicedriven Immigration Advisor to join our team. Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director for Immigration Services the Immigration Advisor supports international students scholars and their families by providing guidance on immigration status and connecting them with appropriate resources for a broad range of concerns.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise international students and scholars on immigrationrelated questions including F1 and J1 visa categories.
  • Provide information and referrals on general issues affecting international populations.
  • Enter and update records in both university and government databases to generate immigration documents.
  • Process immigration forms for student requests including work authorization applications and document reprints.
  • Respond to inquiries via email phone and in person at the front desk.
  • Support prearrival admissions and status activation communications and casework for F1 and J1 students in coordination with the Assistant Director.
  • Conduct outreach to recent graduates to ensure compliance with federal reporting requirements related to OPT and STEM OPT extensions.

This is a fulltime (39 hours/week) oneyear fixed term endowed position based in Ithaca NY with the possibility of extension. This role us fully onsite. Work hours can be either 8am4:30pm or 8:30am5pm to be mutually agreed upon.

What You Need

We are seeking a team member who is organized attentive and makes clients feel welcome understood and that their needs are being met. Attention to detail and aptitude to manage a large volume of casework and client questions are also highly desirable. Additionally you will have:

  • Associates degree or equivalent education and work experience required.
  • Minimum of two years experience in student services teaching counseling overseas development work or a closely related field.
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong service orientation.
  • Aptitude in working with computer software packages such as word processing spreadsheets and database applications (e.g. Sunapsis).
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students faculty staff and community members.

If you possess these experiences and skills this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications we would view as incredibly helpful in this role to include:

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent.
  • Ability to interpret government regulatory language.
  • Second language skills highly desirable.
  • International student and/or scholar services experience and familiarity with Cornell University desirable.
  • Proficiency in PeopleSoft Sunapsis or similar software.
