Position Description and Qualifications

Job Posting Summary:

The Ensworth Arts Department seeks a contracted parttime Musical Director for the approaching academic year. The candidate must be an experienced educator and have work experience as a professional actor. The applicant would be responsible for directing the musical educating the student cast and crew and participating in collaborative oversight of the entire production from preliminary planning to final storage of items used in the performance. Budget management and resource monitoring/reposting/stewardship will be necessary. An Undergraduate Degree is required either in Theater or a related field and a strong candidate will possess a Masters Degree. Knowledge of and proficiency in Acting Technical Theater Choreography Voice Piano and/or other Musical Instruments is ideal.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Abides by Ensworths Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct

  • Adheres to the Essential Expectations of an Ensworth Faculty Staff or Administrator
  • Collaborate with the team that chooses the musical for the approaching year in partnership with K12 Arts Director and HS Music Department.
  • Oversight of audition process and casting in partnership with K12 Arts Director and HS Arts Department.
  • Provide artistic vision and direction for overall production.
  • Foster strong relationships and maintain appropriate boundaries with high school students.
  • Uphold high standards for content appropriate for a K12 educational environment.
  • Work collaboratively with the entire Arts Department.
  • Work with the Technical Theater Director on planning for the performance including staffing and logistics.
  • Work with the Music Department on planning for the performance including staffing and logistics.
  • Coach actors and work with all ensemble members.
  • Coordinate rehearsal schedule over the entire production timeline.
  • Coordinate choreography including participation in hiring an appropriate choreographer if necessary.
  • Plan budgeting and expenditures for overall production with the Arts Chair K12 Arts Director.
  • Engage in promotional planning and coordination to include promotional materials and opportunities.
  • Help organize prop and costumes storage before during and after production.
  • Instruct using a wide variety of traditional and contemporary styles and pedagogy.
  • Capable of set design and creation potentially being able to use a workshop for building sets under the oversight and management of the Technical Theater Director..
  • Is studentcentered and uses performance opportunities as an educational experience to nurture and provide growth cultivating a positive learning environment and mindset for all students.
  • Integrates technology to support curricular aims and help students effectively achieve their goals
  • Helps support equipment setup and breakdown as a Performing Arts Team Member.
  • Work as a collaborative and supportive member of the Arts Team bringing positive energy and a strong roll up your sleeves work ethic to all aspects of work in support of productions and events.
  • Is an approachable and communicative community member available to answer questions provide assistance and represent the school and program with a high degree of professionalism.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Theater Education Theater Musical Theater Acting; Masters Degree preferred
  • Minimum of 35 years of acting/drama/theater experience in a classroom setting
  • Must be a highly skilled artist with a presentable portfolio of work and a demonstrated record of working with students in an educational environment
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment including students coworkers parents alumnae volunteers and the public
  • Possesses a positive team mentality with excellent problemsolving multitasking and organization skills
  • Professional and efficient in their ability to work independently while also able to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external partners
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with differing deadlines
  • A high degree of accuracy and superior attention to detail
  • Must successfully complete background screening and verification
  • Understanding and ability to use computers and technology including Microsoft Excel Word PowerPoint basic office equipment
  • A positive team mentality with excellent problemsolving multitasking and organization skills
  • Professional and efficient in their ability to work independently while also able to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external partners
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with differing deadlines
  • A high degree of accuracy and superior attention to detail
  • Must successfully complete background screening and verification

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Regularly works in standard performing arts theater office and classroom conditions
  • Works at a computer screen for extended periods of time; ability to observe students from various distances
  • Frequently required to move around the theater/office/classroom; works at a desk for extended periods of time; occasionally moves around campus and arts facility
  • Ability to occasionally move items weighing up to 50 lbs. across the gallery theater and arts classrooms
  • Occasionally works in a stressful performance environment effectively dealing with a wide variety of challenges deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts; stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions
  • Ensworth requires employees to be physically present on campus with limited exceptions that are at the sole discretion of the School. Under extraordinary circumstances some or all of the workforce may be required to move to a remote working environment. Additionally certain individuals may also be approved for limited remote work based on the nature of the job description specific circumstances and only with written prior approval by a direct supervisor.
