Job Description

Reports To: Chief of Police
Duty Days: 261 Days/8 Hours

Wage/Hour Status: NonExempt

Pay Grade: A06

Qualifications:

College hours high school diploma or GED

Telecommunicator license from the TCOLE or able to obtain within the first year of employment

Complete a TCOLE recognized TLETS/NLETS and TCIC/NCIC Basic Procedures Course within the first six months of employment

Proficient in operating multichannel twoway radio equipment and multiline telephone systems

Ability to remain calm in dealing with the public able to gain information and make appropriate decisions

Ability to work days evenings and night shifts with varied days off

Bilingual (preferred)

Primary Purpose:

Under direct supervision during training period and under limited supervision thereafter is responsible for simultaneously operating a multichannel radio console and a multiline telephone while maintaining computeraided dispatch systems and other computer systems. Responsible for receiving coordinating and disseminating critical information from various sources and maintaining radio contact with mobile/field units to monitor response progress and any needed support. This position works in the Communications Center which is responsible for providing services 24 hours per day seven days per week.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Operate all communications center equipment to include radios emergency and nonemergency telephone systems computer aided dispatch system alarm receiving system video monitoring equipment teletype device for the deaf and additional equipment is added to the center.
  2. Effectively receive and dispatch with accuracy all calls for service to the proper units and locations.
  3. Operate various computer software programs to provide prompt and accurate information.
  4. Maintain accurate records concerning status of police and other emergency responders.
  5. Monitor and dispatch all alarms received via alarm systems receivers to appropriate agency/personnel at the required level.
  6. Receive and transmit any information called for by emergency response personnel with speed and accuracy.
  7. Assist persons at the public reception window.
  8. Maintain strict radio discipline and comply with all department directives in the use of communication devices/systems.
  9. Immediately and properly record all data and maintain correspondence (radio telephone walkin) logs.
  10. Maintain personal uniform and appearance to meet appearance standards specified by department policy regulation and directive.
  11. Assist with record and file maintenance as appropriate.
  12. Perform all other duties related to the position as specified by appropriate authority.

Equipment Used:

Personal and networked computer and peripheral technology equipment multichannel twoway radio equipment multiline telephone equipment closed circuit television equipment electronic alarm receiving equipment facility access control equipment and severe weather monitoring equipment.

Working Conditions:

Long periods of sitting keyboarding and interactions with internal and external publics in an indoor smoke free closed office environment with controlled temperature and fluorescent lighting while maintaining emotional control under stress.
