JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
The Environmental Health Specialist is responsible for performing specialized technical work to ensure adherence to environmental health laws and regulations while integrating Environmental Justice (EJ) initiatives and climate sustainability efforts into all aspects of the role. This includes conducting inspections of regulated facilities such as retail food service establishments childcare centers group homes schools swimming pools body art establishments and onsite wastewater treatment systems. The role involves investigating complaints responding to outbreaks determining compliance with codes and regulations preparing reports of inspection findings and initiating enforcement actions as necessary. Additionally the specialist will answer public inquiries about environmental health issues and assist other team members. Duties may vary based on area of specialization departmental needs and workload allocation.
Environmental Health Specialists are expected to approach their work through the lens of environmental justice and climate sustainability ensuring that all communitiesespecially those historically marginalizedbenefit equally from environmental protections and public health interventions.
SCHEDULE:
This position operates on a choice of our fourday work week (typically MondayThursday) or a fiveday work week. This position may be hybrid with remote work and inoffice work as needed and approved by the Supervisor.
COMPENSATION:
Hiring Range: $32.43$34.00 USD Hourly
Compensation will be determined based on education experience and skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Performs compliance inspections of regulated facilities such as retail food service establishments childcare centers group homes schools swimming pools body art establishments onsite wastewater treatment systems. Documents all violations determines compliance with applicable local and state laws and regulations. Reviews construction plans for compliance with applicable public health related codes and regulations.
Receives and reviews permit and plan review applications issues permits and approvals. Prepares and maintains inspection reports and other appropriate documents including but not limited to memoranda letters notices of violation and civil penalty notices. Initiates enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Prepares and submits written comments to other agencies regarding the environmental health aspects of proposed activities such as development and construction projects.
Investigates complaints regarding environmental health concerns. Conducts disease surveillance and investigations collects biological and zoonotic samples using best practice methods.
Provide and explain educational materials regulations policies and other compliance information to contractors permit holders consultants and the general public. Responds to consumer complaints requests for information regarding regulations procedures and systems. Participates in professional conferences and committees to continue learning. Instructs classes in the proper handling storage and preparation of food for the benefit of food service establishment personnel. Responds to environmental health emergencies such as regulated facility fires and public health emergencies as needed or . Ensures that communication is competent and reflective of Health Equity and Environmental Justice principles.
Participates in conferences and committees to remain current on Environmental Health issues including Health Equity and Environmental Justice frameworks climate change resiliency and environmental sustainability principles.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience: At least one year of experience in Environmental Health Restaurant/Retail Food Management Teaching Training or related fields.
Education: Bachelors degree in Environmental Health EnvironmentalScience or a related field.
License/Certifications: Compliance with Public Health immunization policy (details provided upon interview).
Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Industryspecific Knowledge: Familiarity with local state and federal laws codes and regulations pertaining to environmental health or the ability to learn quickly.
Technical Skillset: Strong written and oral communication; independent critical thinking and analysis; ability to understand laws regulations and policies; proficiency in time management and prioritization.
Soft Skillset: Teamoriented selfmotivated reliable; ability to articulate information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
Additional: Bilingual in Spanish (speaking and writing) is preferred. Candidates must successfully pass retail food standardization and required training(s) within one year of hire.
