Job Description

Working/Functional Title

Director of Health and Wellbeing

Position Summary

The Director of Health and Wellbeing at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine serves as a key strategic leader responsible for collaborating with CVM leadership to foster a collegewide culture of systemic wellbeing. This position leads the design and implementation of inclusive sustainable initiatives that promote wellbeing across all populations within the Collegeincluding students staff and faculty. This role provides direct oversight of the Colleges Veterinary Social Work Services and the Inclusivity Office emphasizing the interconnectedness of wellness inclusion and support services. Additionally the Director serves as the primary liaison to the Colleges embedded CAPS (Counseling and Psychiatric Services) counselor and collaborates closely with MSUs University Health and Wellbeing division to ensure alignment with institutional wellness priorities. The Director plays a vital role in advancing equityfocused traumainformed and evidencebased health and wellbeing strategies that address both individual and systemic needs.

Primary responsibilities of the position include:

Strategic and Systemic Leadership

  • In collaboration with CVM leadership develops and implements a comprehensive collegewide strategic plan for systemic wellbeing that aligns with institutional goals and values.
  • Works with leadership to embed wellbeing and inclusivity into policies procedures academic experiences and workplace practices.
  • Provides leadership for culture change initiatives related to compassion fatigue mental health stigma worklife integration and resilience.

Oversight and Team Leadership

  • Provides direct supervision and strategic guidance to Veterinary Social Work Services and to the Assistant Director of Inclusivity.
  • Serves as the primary liaison to the embedded CAPS counselor supporting CVM students coordinating integration and support.
  • Serves as the CVM representative and collaborates with MSUs University Health and Wellbeing to align college initiatives with universitywide efforts.

Program Development and Implementation

  • Designs and implements programs and services that promote holistic wellbeing and reduces burnout across all roles in the College.
  • Identifies training educational programs and peer support models tailored to veterinary professionals.

Assessment and Impact Evaluation

  • Creates and manages tools for assessing program effectiveness and institutional progress.
  • Uses data to inform iterative improvements and communicate outcomes to stakeholders.

Campus Engagement and Community Building

  • Partners with college and university units to provide coordinated inclusive services that address the diverse needs of the CVM community.
  • Facilitates dialogue training and engagement opportunities to foster a culture of psychological safety belonging and shared responsibility for wellbeing.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post bachelors degree work such as a masters in public health social work or related field such as health promotion health communication and 58 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters degree in social work with full licensure
  • At least five years of progressive leadership experience in health and wellbeing within an academic setting
  • Experience in Veterinary Social Work
  • Experience supervising staff or programs relating to wellness mental health or inclusivity
