Job Description

Located 20km west of Sydney on Dharug country with a population of 240000 residents Cumberland City Council is the fourth most populous Local Government Area in Greater Sydney. ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Councils Finance team sits within the Corporate Performance Directorate and provides expert leadership and guidance to the organisation in all aspects of Councils finances and end to end financial processes across the organisation including payroll accounts payable and receivable rates valuations revenue recovery and financial analytics.

The Revenue Recovery/Debtors Officer manages Council Debt Recovery processes to ensure that rates charges and sundry debtor accounts are recovered within the benchmark of less than 5% outstanding as at 30 June each financial year. This position also coordinates the administration of Accounts Receivable functions and supervises the Accounts Receivable Officer & Collection Officer to ensure that all aspects are cohesively operated for Council. This role is also responsible for undertaking specific projects when required.

The successful applicant will require:

  • Minimum of ten (10) years experience working within a Rates team similar Debt Recovery/Accounts Receivable role within Local Government or tertiary qualifications in a related field
  • Significant experience outsourcing and managing accounts sent to debt recovery firms or collection agencies
  • Knowledge and understanding of the relevant sections of the Local Government Act 1993 relating to Rates Recovery and Sundry Debtor accounts
  • Excellent conflict resolutions skills
  • Thorough knowledge of debt recovery processes including: Statement of Liquidated Claims Judgments Writs bankruptcy examining debtors Sale of Land
  • Computer literacy particularly in the MS Office suite of products
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to be meticulous and pay attention to detail to work related activities
  • Proven ability to work productively as a member of the Rates and Accounts Receivable teams and contribute to team goals.
  • Class C drivers licence
