About the Department:
The Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) has 45 fulltime faculty members with diverse areas of research focus including cybersecurity data mining and machine learning natural language processing humancentered computing ubiquitous and mobile computing cyberphysical systems and engineering education. IST has the largest and fastestgrowing undergraduate major in the university the ABETaccredited and CAECD validated BS in Information Technology serving about 2000 students. Additionally the department has about 150 graduate students in the MS in Applied Information Technology (AIT) program and 180 students in the MS in Information Systems program. The online MS programs in IT ranked 35th among public universities and 50th overall by U.S. News and World. In addition to BS and MS programs the department also participates in an interdisciplinary Digital Media and Web Design Minor MS program in Data Analytics Engineering and a PhD program in Information Technology (concentration in IST) offered by the College of Engineering and Computing. Research expenditures of the IST department totaled about $2.8 million in 2024. Funding sources include NSF DOD DARPANIH and DHHS. Faculty awardees include NSF CAREER and NSF CRII recipients.

The College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) at George Mason University is a fastgrowing force for innovation in research and education. About the Future
