The North Carolina Museum of Art is seeking an enthusiastic team member to be part of our wonderful organization! The Art Handler will handle install pack and transport art from the Museums collection and all work on loan to the Museum. Position is responsible for preparing works for hanging or storage with minimal risk to the object. This position will be the lead on artwork and art movements from the permanent collection and loans to the permanent collection galleries.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Working with the Director of Art Services and Installation to manage object installations and deinstallations of permanent collection objects loans to the collection and outgoing loans from the collection.
- Determining equipment needs crating storing and safe handling of artworks.
- Partnering with the Registration department to coordinate receiving unpacking and returning of art objects.
- Working with Art Handling colleagues on the installation and deinstallation of 2D and 3D works of art at the NC Museum of Art the NC Museum of Art Park the NC Museum of Art WinstonSalem and other museums galleries and private lenders homes and offices as required.
- Judging the most appropriate hardware for the security of the artwork.
- Participating in the proper loading of art objects into trucks and ensuring the safe transit and delivery in the Museums custom art delivery truck.
- Managing the art storage areas by working with supervisor and Collections Management Department to provide a safe clean and secure environment for works of art.
- Serving as a courier for loaned works of art both nationally and internationally as needed.
- Tracking art movements in TMS software.
- Mounting matting and/or framing objects as assigned.
Position/Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work Monday through Friday; 40 hours.
- Must be able to frequently lift up to 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must have a valid drivers license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
- Must have ability to work at heights up to 50 feet in a motorized personnel lift and up to 18 feet on a ladder.
- Must have ability to drive and oversee the transport of works of art in the Museums art truck.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in art preparation art movement and art handling techniques.
- Demonstrated experience in carpentry with a familiarity of hand tools and installation hardware.
- Demonstrated experience working with various stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work on multiple complex projects.
- Must have ability to judge risk and effectively minimize the danger to valuable art.
Management Prefers:
- Rigging experience or experience moving large sculpture is a plus.
