The Director of Academic Success oversees all operations of the Academic Success office including peer tutoring Supplemental Instruction Peer Academic Coaching and the Writing Center aimed at facilitating student academic achievement. This includes recruiting hiring training and supervising a large student staff and working directly with students to improve study strategies. The Director also works as liaison between Academic Success and other university constituents to promote usage of its services. The Director also oversees maintaining and analyzing all Academic Success data in order to assess the effectiveness of its programs and services and implement datadriven changes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Direct the Academic Success Peer Tutoring program which encompasses the Writing Center independently arranged tutorials for a wide range of subject area tutoring and Supplemental Instruction (SI).
- Recruit hire train supervise and coordinate the training and activities of a large student staff including Peer Tutors SI Leaders and Academic Coaches; Manage all personnel matters including hiring evaluation disciplinary and termination decisions. Work with tutors to resolve issues involving students they are tutoring.
- Conduct individual study strategies consultations with students including referrals selfreferrals and students required to complete an initial consultation. Conduct followup meetings with students as needed.
- Collect and maintain electronic records of all Academic Success activity including visits for tutoring study strategies consultations Supplemental Instruction sessions and peer academic advising sessions. Manage the Academic Success budget and payroll. Engage in ongoing assessment of data in order to make datadriven decisions about changes and improvements in academic support programs and services.
- Coordinate Probation Programs with the Provost Office to provide additional support to students who are on Academic Probation.
- Engage in regular communications (written and verbal) with the Associate Director Peer Tutors and Office Assistants to convey Academic Success policies procedures and operations. Plan and conduct regular staff meetings with the Associate Director Peer Tutors SI Leaders student supervisors and tutoring staff.
- Act as the primary liaison between Academic Success and all other campus partners including Student Success Athletics the faculty; Work directly with academic units to coordinate academic support with various university needs. Regularly represent Academic Success on committees and at faculty meetings department meetings orientations open houses visit days and other university functions.
- Serve as a Student Success coach to a designated group of students as well as provide walkin support for students in need; Facilitate presentations and conduct Student Success workshops for both the general student population and specific university groups and organizations.
Qualifications:
- Masters degree: four to ten years related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience.
- To perform this job successfully an individual should have excellent skills in word processing using spreadsheets creating PowerPoint presentations; have prior experience in using a student information system; and have the ability to learn TutorTrac learning center management software.
- This position requires the ability and/or skill to work closely and professionally with others as part of a team; be flexible; pay attention to detail; work without supervision and demonstrate considerable initiative; communicate professionally through both verbal and written means; work well with men and women from diverse backgrounds; manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines; establish departmental goals and priorities; perform advanced supervisory responsibilities; and contribute to Capital Universitys philosophy strategic plan goals and doctrine.
- Must be highly organized and detail oriented since the daytoday responsibilities of the position require managing a wide range of activities on a changing schedule.
