The City of Bessemer is currently seeking dedicated individuals for the position of Police Community Service Worker. This role is responsible for providing direct support and consultation to individuals experiencing social or psychological challenges as well as making referrals to appropriate agencies for specialized care and services. Employees in this job class frequently prepare and deliver oral and visual presentations within the department and at public events about topics related to social work issues mental illnesses domestic violence etc. Police Community Service Workers also prepare numerous detailed written reports to document and keep records of all work activities. Employees exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in completing assignments within established guidelines.COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

The following are jobrelated qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
Drivers license.
Bachelors degree in Social Work or related field (e.g. Psychology Sociology Counseling) from an accredited university or college.
Experience working in the field of Social Work (e.g. counseling rehabilitation services conducting needs assessments providing resources case management).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are jobrelated qualifications deemed desirable by the City of Bessemer. These qualifications may be considered by Bessemer when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.
Certification in Social Work (e.g. LBSW LMSW).
Masters degree in Social Work or related field (e.g. Psychology Sociology Counseling) from an accredited university or college.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Performs community outreach activities to spread awareness of the Police Department by holding (e.g. speaking engagements providing classroom instruction attending community events and serving on professional boards/committees.).
Facilitates inservice training seminars to staff members of boarding homes and other social service agencies in order to teach them how to effectively interact with violent individuals.
Serves on professional boards and committees to increase the availability of mental health services in the community.
Assesses onscene individuals for the possibility of mental illness by checking physical/living conditions performing psychosocial assessments consulting with medical personnel and recommending appropriate courses of action.
Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development awareness of developments in the field and knowledge of relevant practices rules laws policies and/or guidelines.
Serves as a liaison between the public and various social services agencies by building relationships making referrals and providing information to the public about the services and resources various agencies provide.
Provides necessary aid to victims by administering direct assistance providing information or transporting to offsite locations (e.g. agencies clinics hospitals) in order to receive treatment.
Prepares written documentation by completing reports (e.g. incident reports supplemental reports departmental reports) taking notes filing involuntary commitment petitions and writing referral letters.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting as well as regular field visits to other social service agencies community centers and other precinct offices. Work involves use of office equipment such as a computer phone copier projectors laptops etc. May require working on call including nights and weekends. Work may also require dealing with physically aggressive or violent individuals and individuals with mental illnesses.EEO STATEMENT:
