Special Education Teachers are responsible for teaching students in the substantially separate Language Based Learning Disabilities program. The Language based Learning Disabilities classroom is for students with a specific learning disability that affects language (Reading/Writing/Speaking/Listening). The candidate will work in consultation with special and general education teams. The Special Education Teacher will effectively manage a continuous caseload including transitioning students in/out of programs participating in professional learning communities with grade level cohorts providing parent communication developing behavioral interventions and working with paraprofessional staff to ensure the consistent provision of a high quality program for students.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Teaches reading language arts mathematics social studies science by using the district curriculum and other appropriate learning activities reflecting a deep understanding of state frameworks and use of the workshop model.
  • Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Provides structure in the classroom by promoting a positive classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Prepares teaching materials and related reports including ongoing data analyses for the purpose of improving instruction implementing lesson plans and documenting student progress.
  • Participates in inservice programs to enhance the overall educational experience for students.
  • Instructs and provides assistance for student learning individually or in groups designing lessons that both present and reinforce learning concepts.
  • Works under the general supervision of the building principal and other building administrators manages student behavior assesses and evaluates student achievement.

Job Requirements:

Work Year: Teachers in Salem Public Schools work a 185 day school year (180 student contact days plus 5 professional development days. Please click here to view the 202526 district and/or school calendars.

Salary: Teacher salaries in the Salem Public Schools are determined by the Salem Teachers Union collective bargaining agreement (see new 202427 language with updated salary information here).
