Classification Counselor 3 Olympic Corrections Center

Full Time Permanent

Location: Forks WA

This is an anticipated vacancy.


The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position ofClassification Counselor 3at Olympic Corrections Center in Forks WA.

Olympic Corrections Center (OCC) is a 381bed male facility located near the Hoh Rainforest. This facility houses minimum security incarcerated individuals and offers treatment work and vocational programs to help ready the incarcerated to transition back into the community. OCC also has outside work crews to serve the community as well as fire crews that work alongside Department of Natural Resource employees.

Whether the work is inside a prison in community corrections or in an administrative office the Washington State Department of Corrections professional staff experience a high degree of personal satisfaction knowing they are creating environments in which all incarcerated individuals can learn to make choices that contribute to a safer society.

Duties

As a lead/supervisor the Classification Counselor 3 provides guidance and technical expertise to other Classification Counselors.

Key duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assume delegated responsibilities of unit supervisor in his/her absence.
  • Mentor train monitor and audit the work of subordinate and/or other lowerlevel staff.
  • Assign and evaluate work.
  • Handle complex and nonroutine caseloads.
  • Investigate all the information available for each arriving incarcerated individual and determine the individuals documentation and programming needs.
  • Prepare and submit Offender Release Plan.
  • Counsel and inform incarcerated individuals regarding community resources and problems they might encounter in their transition to work release parole or release. Work with internal and external entities to facilitate incarcerated individuals reentry into the community.
  • Regularly review and update incarcerated individuals plans and programming needs.
  • Prepare Mutual Agreement Plans and coordinate with other facilities for acceptance.
  • Monitor incarcerated individuals programming and behaviors.
  • Exercise sound judgment aligned with Department policy in decisions concerning sanctions treatment and education referrals.
  • Write correspondence infractions and incident reports.
  • Provide clear concise and consistent communication with staff incarcerated individuals and stakeholders through available resources.
  • Record access update and retrieve incarceratedrelated information from agency database.
  • Maintain electronic and hard copy incarcerated individual files to accurately reflect current incarcerated individuals status.
  • Perform essential audits and investigations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

A Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and two years of professional counseling or casework experience. A Masters degree in sociology psychology social work criminology or closely related field will substitute for one year of the required experience.

OR

Satisfactory completion of two years of college 60 semester or 90 quarter credits) and four years of professional counseling or casework experience.

OR

One year as a Classification Counselor 2 in Washington State service to include at a minimum satisfactory completion of two years of college 60 semester or 90 quarter credits).

OR

Six 6 years juvenile or adult corrections experience in treatment custody or community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience.

In addition to at least one of the above this position requires:

Training Experience training mentoring and coaching staff.

Ability to:

  • Write clearly factually and concisely.
  • Analyze and interpret data weigh the risks and make decisions or recommendations to address staff and/or offender needs.
  • Identify and address offender behavior/needs.
  • Organize and prioritize work.
  • Apply conflict resolution skills.

Observation Observes and strategizes personal action based on environmental conditions and human behavior.

Technology Learns and utilizes computerbased applications in the performance of job duties.

StressTolerance Remains calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include but not limited to volatile threatening or other crisis/emergency situations. Expertly intervenes in response to threats.

ProfessionalStandards Knows and applies relevant law policy procedure and practice. Adheres to established productivity standards and timelines. Identifies own training needs and proactively seeks training opportunities.

Adaptability Incorporates new information into an existing framework of understanding. Accepts change and supports the Agency through changes in law policy and procedure.
