Job Description

As a member of the Indigenous Education team the Indigenous Student Secondary Engagement Coach 912 will provide schoolbased support for selfidentified Indigenous students and work closely with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation to foster learning opportunities to promote graduation rates. The individual will support school and system Indigenous student engagement opportunities and the academic success of Indigenous students in alignment with the key objectives of the Indigenous Education Policy and Procedure.

This position reports to the System Lead: Indigenous Education and Outdoor Environmental Education

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and support Secondary Indigenous student achievement in collaboration with the Indigenous Facilitators and inschool teams.
  • Work in the schools to support student engagement including coordinating board services and supports available for Indigenous students to support engagement and success.
  • Establish organize and support Indigenous student groups in Secondary schools throughout the DDSB
  • Work collaboratively with board and school teams to support mental wellbeing for Indigenous students.
  • Support transition programs and plans for Indigenous students in secondary school; this may include working with classroom teachers secondary Indigenous coaches Indigenous student engagement coach 710 and facilitators.
  • Organize plan and support districtwide Indigenous student engagement initiatives throughout the school year.
  • Coplan organize and support Indigenous family events throughout the school year supported by the Indigenous Education Advisory Circle and Indigenous Education System Lead.
  • Support teachers in the creation of classroom communities that foster relationships belonging and mattering and prioritize instructional practices as outlined in the Indigenous Education Procedure.
  • Demonstrate collaborative decision making and collective critical thinking within a team including the Indigenous Education Facilitator (Secondary)
  • Work collaboratively with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and DCE to provide opportunities for Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation members to obtain their diplomas.
  • Work collaboratively with Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation to ensure that students from Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation are on track to graduate work to provide opportunities for credit attainment through experiential learning and community programs.
  • Collaborate with Indigenous Education Department in programming and planning interdepartmental and system professional development opportunities for staff that:
  • Include and prioritize Indigenous voices (authors artists scholars etc.);
  • Are free of harmful stereotypes and narratives;
  • Accurately represent Indigenous contributions both past and present Treaties residential schools accurate histories and the ongoing colonization;
  • Ensure Indigenous expertise and knowledge systems as equal and on par with Eurocentric knowledge;
  • Expose students to learningcentred around current issues involving Indigenous Rights

Qualifications

  • Ontario Teachers Certificate in good standing
  • Indigenous ancestry lived experiences and community connections preferred
  • Skills in consultative and collaborative processes and relationship building skills
  • Excellent communication and problemsolving skills
  • Demonstrating experience in accurately representing Indigenous contributions both past and present Treaties residential schools accurate histories and the ongoing colonization within the creation of learning resources
  • Proven skills with technology and website creation
