Job Purpose
Internal job title: Community Engagement Coordinator
Hours: 22.5 hours over 3 days (flexible)
Contract: Fixed term contract or secondment until 31/07/2026.
We are the charity who look after and bring to life 2000 miles of waterways across England and Wales because we believe that life is better by water. Every role across the Trust plays its part in transforming our canals and rivers into spaces where local people want to spend time and feel better bringing wellbeing benefits to millions.
We are recruiting for a Community Engagement Coordinator to lead on the delivery of community engagement for the National Lottery Heritage funded Vitality from the Vyrnwy project on the Montgomery Canal. Alongside the goal of restoring the Vyrnwy aqueduct to its former glory a vital aim of the project is to engage and connect with new and existing communities surrounding the Vyrnwy aqueduct and the wider Montgomery Canal.
Key to this will be supporting the local community in developing and delivering initiatives which aim to improve physical and mental wellbeing through access to the waterway and aqueduct as well as overcoming barriers to engage new users.
- You will recruit train and support a team of volunteers including young people and develop and lead practical volunteering training and engagement sessions for children young people and the wider community (including targeted groups).
- You will adopt a placebased approach working in partnership with others to achieve a transformation that will materially change patterns of use and perception of nonusers living within 1km to make waterways relevant and build community ownership so that momentum is sustained and wellbeing benefits are realised.
This project like others across Canal & River Trust focus on ensuring more people have access and ability to use our waterway network and ultimately benefit millions of people across England & Wales.
Location & coverage
Offered on a remote working basis with a requirement to attend our main hub spaces as and when required for team working and collaborative meetings. Significant travel throughout the regional waterway network will also be expected to enable site visits and to conduct improvements. You will ideally be located within the Powys Wrexham Cheshire Shropshire Staffordshire or Greater Manchester area.
The new community engagement aspect of this role means you would likely spend 2 / 3 days on site for the first 6 months.
Knowledge Skills/Qualifications & Experience
Key accountabilities:
- Working within a community setting.
- Project management delivery reporting and evaluation.
- Delivering community and volunteering projects with a heritage environment health & wellbeing focus.
- Developing and managing volunteer groups and opportunities and delivering volunteerled activities.
- Building strong relationships and collaborate with partner organisations communities and key stakeholders to delivery mutual benefits and codesigned projects and programmes.
- Sourcing and coordinating social action/volunteer projects.
- Working with young people or vulnerable people including safeguarding.
- Working within the Third Sector/Voluntary organisations is desirable.
- Working with grant funders for community projects is desirable.
About you
Ability to work or experience of working effectively with a diverse group of people including minority or marginalised or underrepresented communities.
Excellent project management skills including budget management and control.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
High levels of energy and commitment.
Ability and willingness to work evenings / weekends as required.
Ability to work well under pressure be motivated and selfmanaged.
Full UK driving license is essential.
