About the LA CIRCLE Program

Canopy Roots is a contracted provider with The City of Los Angeles Mayors Office of Community Safety (MOCS) to operate the Los Angeles CIRCLE (Crisis and Incident Response through Communityled Engagement) program. This is a 24/7 unarmed response program that deploys trained teams to address nonurgent and nonviolent LAPD 911 calls related to unhoused individuals experiencing crisis. Program goals include disrupting the reciprocal relationship between houselessness and the criminal justice system deescalating and supporting stabilization to people experiencing homelessness and promoting sustained positive outcomes for community members through compassionate and traumainformed intervention and connection to appropriate services and resources including case management. Canopy Roots will be operating the CIRCLE Program in the Hollywood Zone of Los Angeles.

About the role

Canopy Roots is an innovative mental health organization based in Minnesota that offers culturally affirming crisis response services. The LA CIRCLE (Crisis and Incident Response through CommunityLed Engagement) Response Team Outreach Advocate is responsible for providing immediate compassionate and traumainformed support to individuals experiencing homelessness or crises in Los Angeles. This position plays a critical role in deescalating situations connecting individuals with essential services and working within the LA CIRCLE team to respond to nonemergency situations that do not require law enforcement intervention. The Outreach Advocate will serve as a bridge between the unhoused population and critical services focusing on safety care and empowerment.

Expectations for this role include setting a consistent and exemplary example of Canopys values in action. The Response Team Outreach Advocate reports directly to the Licensed Mental Health Clinician (LMHC) / Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).

Hiring Salary Range: Day/Mid Shift $25.00 $30.00/hour Night shift hourly rate $27.88 $33.00; Starting hourly wage will depend on your skills and demonstrated readiness for the role

Hours/Day: FridaySaturday 3:00PM11:30PM or SundayMonday11:00PM7:30AM .This role is primarily community based with required attendance at weekly staff meetings taking place either online or in the office.

Essential Job Functions

  • In partnership with Response Team Lead respond rapidly to diverted incidents from the City including but not limited to LAPD designated city agencies and citydesignated partners
  • Coordinate directly with dispatch systems to ensure effective communication maintain safety and plan appropriate community responses
  • Adopting the guidance of Response Team Lead partner collaborate to address the needs of community members experiencing homelessness mental health crises substance abuse or other nonviolent situations
  • Utilize traumainformed and culturally responsive care and harmreduction approaches to deescalate crises provide support and guide individuals through difficult situations with compassion ensuring the safety of both the individual and the community
  • Build rapport with unhoused individuals and others in need addressing both immediate concerns and longterm needs.
  • Connect individuals to essential services including shelters mental health care substance use treatment and housing programs.
  • Assist clients in accessing services by providing transportation helping with benefit applications or advocating with service providers.
  • Collaborate with housing agencies shelters mental health services case managers community partners and LA CIRCLE program partners to ensure timely and comprehensive care.
  • Participate in regular team meetings to review responses enhance intervention skills and identify opportunities for service improvement
  • Document all outreach activities crisis interventions and client interactions in a
  • timely and accurate manner
  • Maintain confidential client records case notes and referral information in
  • accordance with HIPAA and organizational standards
  • Educate community members and stakeholders about the needs of unhoused
  • populations and those in crisis
  • When not responding to diverted incidents conduct followup visits to PEH clients and support CIRCLE program operations.

Requirements

  • At least one year of jobrelated experience conducting street outreach to PEH

and preferably has previous lived experience in homelessness substance abuse

or criminal justice involvement
