Overview

The Mercatus Center has supported talent development for over 40 years emphasizing exposure increased understanding and the ability to apply classical liberal political economy to pressing issues of consequence in academic and policy. The primary aim of Mercatus Center Academic & Student Programs (ASP) fellowships is to encourage exposure and engagement with key ideas and thinkers representing the Austrian Virginia and Bloomington schools of political economy.

This role has primary responsibility for the providing executive assistance support to scholars and senior staff assisting with program management data management and reporting associated with our current fellows and alumni and other administrative needs. The Operations Coordinator stewards these operations and supports ASP to fulfill and advance the following outcomes:

  • Our fellowships are established as premier opportunities for students pursuing high school undergraduate and graduate degrees and earlycareer scholars based at and outside of GMU to be exposed to the Austrian Virginia and Bloomington approaches to political economy.
  • Projects are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • ASPsponsored events run smoothly with few if any hitches due to proper organization of logistics.
  • ASP is effectively supported.
  • Productivity of ASP senior staff in their roles as scholars is increased.

This position works primarily at the office on the Fairfax campus.

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide executive assistance to ASP senior staff and scholars.
  • Represent ASP at various functions and support ASP staff with our programs and their ongoing projects.
  • Assist with the facilitation of various events workshops colloquia and seminars through the production and/or distribution of reading materials organizing logistics corresponding with participants and participating when possible.
  • Ensure events run smoothly and that faculty scholars fellows staff and other participants have needed support.
  • Manage the data associated with our scholars current and former students and our fellowship programs and other academic programs including its creation updates and deletion.
  • Assist the senior staff in responding to data requests about our scholars current and former students and staff from other teams within Mercatus.
  • Assist the senior staff with reporting on our scholars current and former students and academic and student programs.
  • Produce analysis and draft reports as well as execute special projects delegating subtasks to junior program staff as relevant.
  • Provide research writing editing and general support to ASP senior staff in the of ASP strategy program implementation and academic publications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in the social sciences or the humanities from an accredited college or university is required.
  • A strong interest in political economy is preferred ideally at the intersection of the Austrian Virginia and Bloomington schools of political economy with the ability to communicate effectively with scholars and students from graduate programs in the humanities and social sciences.
  • Demonstrated experience in handling and interpreting large data sets and databases.
  • A drive to learn and master new technologies and techniques.
  • Strong problem solving skills with an emphasis on program development and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and balance multiple short and long term projects without direct supervision.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
