Why Your Role Matters:
As Lawyer for People & Conduct you will join the function providing trusted legal advice and representation to the University on areas including employment workplace relations defamation litigation discrimination litigation conduct and integrity and safety across our staff and student population.

Acting under the direction of the Legal Counsel (People & Conduct) you will be providing sound practical legal support to assist the University in reviewing cases and delivering considered recommendations on both student and staff enquires/appeals/complaints aligning with the Universitys relevant codes policies and procedures.

Your day to day will include:

  • Providing technically sound legal advice aligning to UNSW policies and procedures.
  • Assisting the University with a broad range of matters across the spectrum of employment law administrative law and public law particularly in the context of conduct and integrity matters.
  • Representing the University in lower Courts and Tribunals with more experienced inhouse Legal Counsel or external counsel .
  • Proactively providing advice and drafting correspondence in respect of regulatory matters.
  • Researching a range of public law and education law issues to provide legal advice in relation to student conduct and research integrity matters.
  • Overseeing the Universitys timely response to subpoenas and other compulsory processes in the area of People and Conduct including addressing provisions of the GIPA act.
  • Support the training of UNSW staff on legal and compliance matters.

Who You Are: Were seeking a first or secondyear lawyer withan interest in employment law administrative law statutory interpretation education law and public law to advise our internal stakeholders across a broad range of conduct and integrity matters. You will hold the following skills and experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in law and having completed a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice (GDLP) with a keen interest in the areas of administrative and employment law.
  • Admission to the Supreme Court of NSW and eligibility to hold a current practising certificate (or admission in another Australian jurisdiction and eligible to be admitted and practice in NSW).
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills including accuracy and attention to detail with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • A strong customer service focus a flexible and adaptable attitude and an ability to build effective relationships with managers and staff at all levels in the resolution of Legal issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving skills.
