To learn more and view additional openings please visit our Employment Page.The Pest Program is hiring for Multiple NonPermanent Agricultural Technologist!ThePest Program conducts surveys diagnostics and control activities for pests and diseases of important agricultural commodities throughout Washington State. Pest Program employees conduct surveys for Northern giant hornet Japanese beetle spongy moth apple maggot Phytophthora ramorum Spartina and other invasive insect pests diseases and noxious weeds. Some employees work in the Plant Pest and Molecular Diagnostics Lab or the Entomology labs in Olympia or Yakima to provide diagnostics of survey samples. Others assist with control and eradication efforts for Northern giant hornet Japanese beetle spongy moth invasive snails Spartina and knotweed. Regardless of the threat Pest program employees use cutting edge technology scientific processes and teamwork to protect some of Washingtons most valuable agricultural crops.
The Opportunity
The Pest Survey Field Supervisorconducts coordinates and organizes assigned aspects of invasive species survey projects. This position will be responsible for supervising up to eight insect trappers. The pest survey field supervisor positions are temporary positions that are expected to last five six months and begin midMay.Field supervisors typically work full time Monday through Thursday 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a onehour break for lunch.
There will be a mandatory twoday orientation for supervisors on the first two days of employment and an additional threeday orientation for trappers in June. Field supervisors are required to be active participants in both sessions. Employees will be issued a state vehicle and receive training and supplies at orientation.
These positions are represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees. We are looking for a Field supervisor in the following counties- One 1 Field Supervisor in Benton Franklin or Walla Walla County Washington
- One 1 Field Supervisor in YakimaCounty Washington
- One 1 Field Supervisor inChelan Douglas Grant Kittitas or Okanogan County Washington
Duties
Include but are not limited to:
Conduct field operations for Apple Maggot and other invasive species programs- Participate as directed in apple maggot or other invasive species projects.
- Respond to urgent invasive species introductions and participate in immediate containment operations as directed by the Pest Biologists.
- Conduct surveillance and monitoring surveys for invasive pests with potential regulatory implications.
- Train and supervise nonpermanent personnel in assigned invasive pest survey projects.
- Ensure daily completion of own and Ag Aide End of Day Reporting form and submission of hours worked in PISCES.
- Assist management in writing evaluations of nonpermanent personnel.
- Communicate regularly with internal and external stakeholders and individual property owners to obtain permission to conduct survey activities as well as distribute pest information.
Qualifications
Who should apply
Professionals with:- A bachelors degree in entomology plant pathology horticulture botany agronomy or closely allied field
- Equivalent education/experience.
- Two 2 years experience in detection survey control or eradication of pest or invasive species.
- Supervisory or management experience can substitute for one year of survey experience.
- CPR/First aid certification or the ability to obtain certification prior to the start of the active survey season.
Special Requirements:- Must be able to acquire and maintain a valid drivers license to travel on agency business prior to employment.
