The Marion County Sheriffs Office is seeking both trainee and certified applicants to join our Enforcement team as a Deputy Sheriff. The Enforcement Division provides law enforcement services to a diverse population throughout Marion County spanning nearly 1200 square miles. Deputies work in a wide array of environments including urban and rural communities as well as the farming and frontier regions of Marion County depending upon their assignment. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills be serviceoriented and be willing to work in a team environment. We are a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

WAGES
$30.48 $36.76 Trainee Pay Rate*
$33.47 $44.81 Certified Pay Rate*
*Hourly rate negotiable.

In addition to the base pay rates above Enforcement Deputies may be eligible for a variety of pay incentives including:

Typical Duties Duties include but are not limited to the following

  • Patrols roads highways forestland and business areas in the enforcement of traffic and criminal laws; patrols rivers and lakes in a patrol boat enforcing water safety laws and regulations.
  • Conducts criminal and traffic investigations and interviews; gathers evidence and takes statements of involved parties.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records necessary for efficient investigations crime prevention prosecution and office and secures evidence.
  • Operates radar equipment in the enforcement of speed regulations.
  • Makes arrests books prisoners transports prisoners under custody to institutions courts and on extradition.
  • Serves subpoenas warrants of arrest and civil papers.
  • Promotes public relations in a highly visible role by participating in community events/public forums informing the public on public safety concerns and answering inquiries regarding laws and ordinances.
  • Receives complaints from the community selfdispatches mobile units and answers general inquiries of the public.
  • Participates in search and rescue operations.

Requirements for the Position

Must meet the following State Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirements:
  • United States Citizen within one year of employment
  • At least 21 years of age at the time of employment (Marion County Sheriffs Office will consider applicants who are age 20 if they meet the qualifications of the position and are age 21 within 90 days from the recruitment close date.
  • Possess a high school diploma G.E.D. or 4year postsecondary degree
  • Declared by a physician as able to perform the physical duties required by the occupation
  • Of good moral fitness without legal conduct involving moral turpitude dishonesty fraud deceit misrepresentation and conviction of drug and/or sex crimes.
  • Information regarding the minimum qualifications and physical requirements for Oregon law enforcement officers is available in section of the Oregon Administrative Rules.
Must meet the following Marion County requirements:
  1. Meets trainee level requirements; AND has eighteen months of experience as a police officer or deputy; OR any satisfactory combination of work education training or experience relevant to the position as determined by Marion County; AND
  2. Possess a Basic Police certification from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). If in possession of an outofstate Police Officer certification must attend and pass the DPSST Career Officer Development Course within one year of hire. Successful outofstate applicants are hired at the Deputy Sheriff Trainee level and wage range until Oregon certification is achieved.

    • Recent (within the past twelve months) Physical Abilities Test (PAT) completed time from a Military or Law Enforcement related source; OR
    • Successfully completed training resulting in the award of Basic Police Officer certification from Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
  3. Applicants must complete the NEOGOV (Marion County Sheriffs Office) application.

PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
Marion County is a qualifying public employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program fulltime employees working at the County may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan. Questions about your loan eligibility should be directed to your loan servicer or the US Department of Education.
