Job Duties
Western State Hospital (WSH) is recruiting for a Public Safety Officer III who will maintain a safe environment for patients staff and the public at the hospital and The Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents (CCCA). This is accomplished through the provision of support to the clinical staff in the units and treatment milieu management. This position requires availability to be able to work all shifts including weekends and holidays.
The Public Safety Officer will respond and assist unit staff with patients at both WSH and CCCA; conduct walk throughs; check in and scan visitors/patients; transport combative dangerous public safety patients to/from other state facilities court hearings and appointments; patrol hospital property; respond to the scene of any fire disaster duress etc; and observe and assess situations and take appropriate actions when necessary.
Shift Differentials are as follows:
2nd shift weekday $2.50 311
3rd shift weekday $2.25 117
1st shift weekend $3.00 73
2nd shift weekend $3.00 311
3rd shift weekend $3.00 117

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent
valid Virginia Drivers License
previous experience in Law Enforcement Public Safety or related fields and positions meeting and dealing with the general public as a supplier of service
good public relations skills strong interpersonal skills oral and written communication skills
ability to work with mentally ill patients to include adults and juveniles as well as the ability to work cooperatively with other Public Safety staff hospital officials employees and local law enforcement officers
ability to pursue apprehend and return escaping patients to the supervision of their unit staff; physically interact with outofcontrol patients and return them to control and manual dexterity standing walking and lifting as routine part of work
ability to complete SCOP training and obtain certification
