Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 23 days per week. The manager will confirm the teams core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.
The Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) is one of the leading schools of arts and sciences in the nation. Under the leadership of Chris Celenza the James B. Knapp Dean our mission is devoted to discovery that creates new knowledge and solutions that better the world. As the largest school on the Homewood Campus it has more than 72000 alumni (undergraduate and graduate) and there are currently more than 50 departments programs centers and institutes.
The Senior Director of Development (Sr. DOD) plays an integral role within KSAS with direct oversight of the principal major gift and foundations operations the donor relations team operations and management of a fundraising portfolio. The Sr. DOD has direct and indirect supervision of 11 staff including major gift officers the donor relations team a data analyst and a foundations associate. Reporting to the Associate Dean of External Affairs the Sr. DOD is a leader within the office and builds crossinstitutional relationships including with the Deans office and central development to strengthen strategic partnerships and achieve our goals.
The candidate should have a passion for higher education fundraising and finds joy in collaboration strategic thinking and building donor experience programs.
Key responsibilities:
Management of Staff:
- Provide direct and indirect supervision training and guidance to the fundraising team 8 and the donor relation team 3 in the Office of External Affairs. Adhere to hiring management and HR best practices.
- Develop and implement the annual work plans of KSAS fundraising staff in support of institutional and divisional fundraising goals. Measure progress guide portfolio management provide feedback and coaching and hold staff accountable for results.
- Lead all fundraising staff meetings and retreats to ensure collaboration and productivity.
Management of Prospects:
- Manage a portfolio of 75100 principal and major gift prospects primarily within the United States.
- Expected to raise between $45M annually. Complete at least 70 visits per year solicit between 1015 major and principal gifts per year. These constituencies may include full and parttime undergraduate and graduate alumni parents faculty staff and other affiliated or unaffiliated constituencies.
Management of Programs:
- Manage the KSAS principal major gifts and foundations program in collaboration with the Associate Dean including making decisions regarding policy and procedures budgetary expenditures prospect strategy and personnel issues.
- Assist the Associate Dean in campaign planning prospect strategy development and major gift activities. Take a leadership role in ensuring the schools success in meeting annual fundraising goals and universitywide campaign goals developing gift strategies for major $100K) gift prospects and in promoting various program needs. Strategically aligns prospects to meet KSAS and University priorities.
- Work with the Associate Dean of External Affairs on principal gift prospects $5M).
- Direct the prospect management process; lead and manage a comprehensive pipeline development project including assigning prospects to gift officers in collaboration with central partners.
- Oversee the KSAS annual giving program including direct mail in partnership with the Annual Giving Office.
- Responsible for the donor relations program including overall management and decisionmaking on acknowledgements reporting bespoke stewardship activities and related events.
- Work with the Director of Constituent Engagement to provide strategic guidance on KSAS alumni relations and events to strengthen the schools pipeline of volunteer leaders and donors. Assist in planning and of KSAS Boards and Councils strategies and meetings.
- Oversee KSAS department liaison responsibilities to aid in strengthening faculty relationships and providing guidance on fundraising opportunities.
- Collaborate with deans faculty and colleagues throughout the enterprise including financial aid student affairs general counsel athletics and central development.
- Attend lead and/or present at institutional development information and task force meetings. Represent KSAS in university central development and steering committee meetings as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelors degree required.
- Seven years professional level experience including at least two years of management experience required.
Preferred Qualifications- Demonstrated success in fundraising including personal solicitation and in closing principal and major gifts. In addition experience in donor relations and alumni relations preferred.
- Experience in an academic and/or higher education development environment including planned giving principal and major gift work and campaign experience preferred.
- Ability to work in a highly complex multidimensional and multidepartmental environment to establish priorities set objectives and achieve stated goals.
- Must be a highly motivated goaloriented strategic thinker with the ability to work independently determine and set priorities manage multiple and interdisciplinary projects and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Work collaboratively with highlevel institutional leadership faculty and development peers as part of a team.
- Excellent interpersonal verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong computer skills and the ability to learn new software.
- Ability and willingness to travel.
- Onsite presence of 3 days/week at minimum.
