Description

The Mount Sinai Emergency Medicine Department is one of the largest in the country. Our faculty staff the hospitals within the Mount Sinai Health System (the Mount Sinai Hospital Mount Sinai Queens Mount Sinai Morningside Mount Sinai West Mount Sinai Brooklyn Mount Sinai South Nassau as well as affiliated hospitals including Elmhurst Hospital Center Queens Hospital Center and Richmond University Medical Center. The Emergency Medicine Service Line has almost 300 faculty more than 100 physician assistants and treat more than 750K patients annually. The Department is ranked number 3 in research funding from the National Institutes of Health is home to 2 emergency medicine residencies 11 fellowships (including one in Pediatric Emergency Medicine) and is affiliated with 2 pediatric residencies.

Overall Responsibilities:

The System Vice Chair of Research is a senior leadership department based role whose primary responsibility is the development and of system wide research strategy aligned with department goals and institutional priorities. This position is focused on elevating the research profile and scientific impact of the department through its faculty and staff to achieve national recognition and prominence in the field of Emergency Medicine research.

This role provides strategic direction and oversight to all research related activities including mentoring research faculty at all levels developing scientific priorities to advance cutting edge research managing department resources to ensure strong research financial health collaborating with institutional partners to promote team science and discovery advising key stakeholders on research initiatives and serving as a model senior investigator in the department.

The ideal candidate will be a faculty member with a robust track record of independent research funding demonstrated success collaborating with other members of the scientific community history of scholarly productivity as evidenced by publications in high impact journals and numerous invited talks and podium presentations to proliferate their work. Other desired characteristics for this position include strong interpersonal communication skills readiness to partner with academic faculty and administrative staff a professional with a strong understanding of research finances and a visionary thought leader who wants to grow and develop the department into a research powerhouse.

Specific Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Leadership

  • Serve as the senior leader for all research related matters for the department including as a member of the senior leadership council
  • Partner with director of research to lead the departments research mission
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive system wide research strategic plan including monitoring progress and metric performance against goals and objectives
  • Collaborate with local national and international experts in the field of emergency medicine research to advance departments research reputation

2. Research Operational Excellence

  • Establish high quality standards best practice procedures and consistent policies to enable efficient and effective research operations
  • Partner with relevant institutional partners including research administration grants and sponsored projects office IRB to streamline and optimize research operations
  • Chair departmental research meetings and provide guidance on research promotional items such as website social media professional society meetings

3. Mentoring and Training

  • Promote scholarly achievement and academic excellence for research faculty at all levels
  • Intentionally mentor and develop faculty members in their research pursuits
  • Establish faculty development strategies to grow recruit and retain the best talent
  • Coach and evaluate research faculty during their annual goal setting and evaluation meetings
  • Oversee trainee and learner research projects and initiatives

4. Resource Stewardship

  • Oversee and manage all aspects of research finances and departmental resources including but not limited to space staff funding equipment
  • Strategically invest in promising areas of research and key individuals to grow departments research portfolio
  • Make resource recommendations where necessary to balance budgets close studies transition projects etc.


Responsibilities

Expectations:

  • Reporting: The System Vice Chair of Research will report to the System Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and collaborate with system leadership on all research related matters.
  • Leadership: Partnering with the (administrative) Director of Research play a pivotal role in shaping the departments research priorities goals and objectives with the intent to propel the departments research standing to among the top in the nation
  • Evaluation and Metrics: Provide regular updates on the departments research portfolio and individual faculty performance ensuring synergy and alignment.
  • Committees: Serve on department medical school and health system committees and attend relevant meetings related to research


Qualifications
  • MD or equivalent terminal degree.
  • Proven leadership experience leading diverse teams in matrixed environments.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in emergency medicine research.
  • Strong previous track record mentoring and developing colleagues faculty and staff.
  • Excellent communication and interprofessional skills.

PhD compensation range from 375K to 425K to MD compensation range from 375K to 425K.

Mount Sinai Health System provides a salary range to comply with the New York City law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors including experience specialties historical productivity historical collections and hospital/community need. As such an actual salary may fall closer to one or the other end of the range and in certain circumstances may wind up being outside of the listed salary range. The salary range listed is for fulltime employment and does not include bonuses / incentive compensation or benefits.
