The Chief of Dentistry position reports directly to the DOC Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and serves as the Chief Dentist for the agency.

The Chief of Dentistry position will utilize a matrixed reporting structure with Health Services Managers Health Services Administrators and the Chief Medical Officer the Chief of Dentistry clinically directs the staff who administer the dental treatment provided to incarcerated individuals in Department of Corrections facilities. Provides clinical oversight of dental services and partners with the Health Services Managers Health Services Administrators and Chief Medical Officer to operationalize Washington DOC Dental Services.

The Chief of Dentistry assures that the dental care delivered meets professional standards and department policy as well as complying with Federal and state laws collaboratively manages access to dental care and is a key leader in strategic planning of dental services. Participates as member of the Health Services (HS) Extended Leadership group.

Duties

Vision design and implementation of a comprehensive Dentistry Program

  • In collaboration with Leadership identify and design the model of care for the individuals needing dental services while incarcerated in DOC. This model will include integration with other Health Services disciplines as identified in the Patient Centered Medical Home model.
  • Utilize facility health services leaders develop a plan for implementation of this model of care and follow through on plan.
  • Final clinical decisions in patient care as necessary.
  • Serve as the DOC expert on dental care to include presentations at legislative hearings litigations and committees.
  • Responsible for building a network of support and services with stakeholders within and outside of DOC.
  • Policy and Protocol Management.
  • Responsible for the writing and updating of all dental care related policies and protocols.
  • Responsible for providing subject matter expert consolation in other policies such as 610.040 Health Screenings and Assessments.
  • Ensure that agency policies related to dental care are consistent with relevant case law and professional and ethical standards.

Policies will ensure the following:

  • Appropriate screenings are conducted to identify individuals with dental care concerns and risks
  • Individuals with dental concerns have appropriate assessments and treatment plans in place in accordance with agency policy.
  • Develop and approve curriculum for dental care training of staff within the agency.
  • Ensure that staff throughout the agency have the training and support they need to effectively provider services to individuals with dental concerns.
  • Monitor program data to ensure that services and resources are being utilized efficiently and effectively

Clinical Oversight of Dental Services for the Department of Corrections

  • Oversee Quality Assurance practices across all facilities
  • Ensure Clinical Oversight of all Dentists and Dental staff
  • Report clinical events and practice concerns related to DOC Dental Staff to the Department of Health
  • Ensure that the agencys dental providers are appropriately credentialed.
  • Determine clinical privileges for dental providers.
  • Participates as member of the Health Services (HS) Extended Leadership group.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid unrestricted license to practice Dentistry in the State of Washington.
  • Knowledge of the Washington State Dental Practice Act (RCW 18.32 RCW 18.29 RCW 18.350 RCW 18.260 the State Dental Quality Assurance Commission (DQAC; WAC chapter 246817 including dentist supervision requirements dental assistant required supervision and allowable/prohibited tasks expanded function dental auxiliary required supervision and allowable/prohibited tasks dental hygienist required supervision and allowable/prohibited tasks and professional ethical standards of practice.   • Demonstrate knowledge of a complete range of dental procedures including diagnostic and preventive surgical endodontic periodontic prosthetic and restorative dentistry procedures. A working knowledge of pharmacology and physiology as related to dental practice.
  • Ability to work with and supervise diverse dental staff members
  • Ability to audit and analyze dental practices at all DOC facilities
  • Computer skills appropriate to the work performed by the Chief of Dentistry

Preferred Qualifications:

  • DDS or DMD degree from a CODA accredited School of Dentistry
