Job Description

Introduction

Purpose

The Fleet Repair SupervisorSenior directs personnel engagedin light and heavy vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs in the FleetServices Section.

Essential Functions

Technical:

  • Schedule and implement the preventive maintenance program.
  • Assist in the diagnosis of equipment malfunctions.
  • Road test and/or inspect completed work and work in progress.

Supervisory:

  • Assign coordinate and direct the work of Fleet Repair Supervisors Vehicle Service Technicians and other craft and maintenance workers.
  • Provide coaching and technical support to staff; set performance standards monitor work in progress and evaluate performance.
  • Assist in interviewing candidates and making hiring recommendations.
  • Implement promote and enforce work policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Assist management in reviewing and advising changes in equipment specifications.
  • Approve routine and emergency parts purchases and service order invoices.

Administrative:

  • Monitor the budget and manage expenditures and cost for staff and operations.
  • Maintain records and data entry procedures in the Assetworks and Financial Management Information System (FMIS) systems.
  • Allocate and direct resources to ensure efficient effective and economical service.
  • Coordinate the operation of light and heavy repair at Central Garage.
  • Communicate and work effectively with personnel other departments and outside vendors on repair services and parts delivery.
  • Coordinate the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) drug test program for all repair staff members.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must work variable and extended hours to meet the Citys needs during weatherrelated events and other emergencies that may include evenings weekends and holidays.
  • Must respond to emergency callouts and report within 60 minutes or fewer at any time during the day or night any day of the week for snow and ice control operations and other emergencies.
  • This position is subject to U.S. Department of Transportation Regulations on Drug and Alcohol Testing and random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment.
  • Must perform light physical activity exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
  • Must withstand prolonged exposure to variable and extreme weather conditions including rain wind excessive heat intense cold and snow.
  • Must perform tasks that require manual dexterity and coordination.
  • Must wear and use personal protective equipment (PPE) standard to equipment repair and maintenance including common and specialized safety equipment (i.e. shoes gloves glasses hearing protection safety vest and reflective clothing).

The preplacement medical requirements for this titleinclude:

  • Physical/lift test
  • Audiogram
  • Vision
  • DOTDrug Test

Minimum Requirements

  1. Associate degree in Automotive Technology or a closely related field from an accredited college.
  2. Four years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment including one year of experience in a lead or supervisory role.
  3. A Valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) (Class A or B) without Air Brakes restrictions within six months of appointment and throughout employment.
  4. Good driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may beconsidered.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Skill in repairing specialized equipment used by the City of Milwaukee including by not limited to refuse packers dump trucks and forestry equipment.

Knowledge Skills Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical:

  • Knowledge of the principles and best practices of maintenance and repair of light and heavy vehicles and equipment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical procedures hydraulic systems electrical systems vehicle maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret service repair and parts manuals and electrical and hydraulic schematic diagrams and charts in both hard copy and digital formats.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to learn specialized computer applications and platforms.

Communication and Interpersonal:

  • Verbal communication and customer service skills to share information clearly and courteously with internal and external customers.
  • Written communication skills including the ability to prepare clear and concise correspondence and reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow staff direct reports elected officials other agencies and the public.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and fairly with people whose backgrounds may differ from ones own.

Leadership:

  • Knowledge of leadership principles and best practices for selecting supervising and motivating employees.
  • Ability to assign duties set performance standards monitor work in progress and evaluate performance.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate work of others.
  • Ability to make hiring recommendations.
  • Ability to provide guidance training and coach team members to success.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 1HX) is$95932$105223annually and the resident incentive salary range is$98810$108380 annually.Appointmentabove the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and otherqualifications and is subject to approval.

The incumbents of positions in this class if certified bythe Commissioner of Public Works asbeing when appropriate regularlyinvolved in snow and ice control operations which results inan excessiveamount of overtime work to receive 4.8 additional biweekly salary ascompensation for such overtime work.
