FLSA Status: ExemptSite/Location:Administration BuildingReports to: SuperintendentDate:3/26/2025POSITION SUMMARY

The Deputy Superintendent provides leadership and oversight for Teaching & Learning Special Education and Student Services for the division. This position ensures that all students including those with diverse learning needs receive highquality educational opportunities and support services. The Deputy Superintendent collaborates with district leaders school administrators educators and families to promote the integration of instructional practices personalized learning student modifications and socialemotional mental and behavioral support for students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists in developing and monitoring the Comprehensive Strategic Plans implementation including reporting progress and attainment of goals and objectives.
  • Routinely reviews evaluates and assesses division programs and services including but not limited to the instructional program services for students with disabilities support services for students alternative school programs early childhood programs services for gifted and talented students services for English Language Learners and staff professional growth and development.
  • Ensures the superintendent is kept fully informed about matters within the division and advises on such issues. Also will recommend solutions to a wide range of complex issues and corrective action plans.
  • Communicates effectively and equitably with the division and all other audiences to articulate information regarding division programs specific concerns and messages that need to be delivered/addressed.
  • Assists in the preparation of needed board policies and administrative procedures for the School Boards review and/or action.
  • Ensures implementation and evaluation of curricula in alignment with State standards.
  • Assists in the development of the budget and related state and/or federal grants related to instruction special education and student services.
  • Oversees and monitors the development and implementation of the districtwide Professional Learning Plan.
  • Leads datainformed decisionmaking in collaboration with district and building administrators to constantly evaluate and improve instruction teacher training curriculum implementation assessments and other aspects of the divisions academic programs and culture.
  • Ensures the effectiveness of the instructional program including special education by measuring student achievement against State and local standards and initiates program changes as necessary.
  • Ensures the seamless delivery of support services for students through collaborative and timely efforts with schoolbased administrators central office department personnel parents and outside community agencies.
  • Leads and guides processes for curriculum planning coordination and evaluation for both regular and special education.
  • Attends School Board meetings and leads Board committee(s) as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the superintendent.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Masters degree or higher in Education Educational Leadership or a related field required.
  • Postgraduate professional certificate with endorsement in school administration required or pending.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in central or school administration with supervisory responsibilities preferred.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of effective practices in child development program evaluation curriculum instruction assessment professional development special education and student services.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of public school operations school law Virginia Department of Education requirements and federal state and local regulatory guidance.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of equitable practices that create a safe inclusive and supportive learning environment for students and work environment for employees.
  • Ability to lead and manage large groups of people craft departmental goals and objectives and oversee division projects and initiatives.
  • Requires excellent leadership detail orientation written communications and presentation skills.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
  • Directly supervises a team of 3 direct reports including the Directors of Teaching & Learning Special Education and Student Services.
  • Participates in the hiring process of other employees.
  • Makes hiring decisions for other employees.

  • Coaches and mentors other employees.
  • Schedules (determine hours worked time off) work of other employees.
  • Reviews the work of other employees.
  • Completes written evaluations of other employees.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • Reliable transportation necessary
  • Daily travel between schools LCS buildings and local areas required
  • Minimal travel outside of the City of burg as needed
