Job Description

Essential Functions of the Position

Reporting to the President the Vice President of Development serves on the leadership team for the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) and is responsible for raising funds to support the organizations mission. The Vice President works collaboratively with the Vice President of Lifesaving Initiatives to understand the resource needs of the organization when developing funding priorities. This position also works with the Senior Director of Marketing Communications and Public Relations to ensure appropriate marketing materials area available to support fundraising efforts.

The Vice President of Development is responsible for strategic and operational planning for individual giving (including major and planned gifts direct mail) corporate and foundation relations capital campaign planning and special events and managing budge priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a longterm strategic plan for growing the donor base and attracting new donors through various channels. Identify resources needed to execute the strategic plan and develop a timeline for achieving the strategic objectives.
  • Manage major gift and planned giving programs. Identify research cultivate solicit and steward major donors. Work collaboratively with the President and Board of Directors to identify potential donors build relationships and grow HSNTs donor base.
  • Actively cultivate and manage strategic volunteers to assist in raising funds for the organization (e.g. Development & Communications Committee)
  • Oversee donor research efforts
  • Manage legal counsel supporting planned giving efforts
  • Develop and execute a capital campaign for building a new primary shelter for HSNT. Work with the President and Board of Directors to ensure the project is feasible and that sufficient funding is available for ongoing operations
  • Identify and manage Development Department staff and support resources necessary to successfully execute the capital campaign
  • Direct overall fundraising programs including direct mail online social media special events and corporate and foundation grants
  • Ensure annual giving programs achieve objectives and are executed properly. Report on key trends including new donors lapsed donors etc.
  • Manage donor stewardship programs
  • Oversee special events to ensure fundraising objectives are met
  • Direct the efforts of the Development Manager regarding corporate and foundation grants inkind donations and followup reports
  • Develop relationships with key corporate and foundation leaders to identify opportunities for grants sponsorships and partnerships
  • Ensure online and social media fundraising efforts are on brand and properly tracked
  • Develop and manage the financial budget for the Development Department. Prepare routine reports for the President and Board of Directors comparing actual results to budge and forecasts
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Director of Marketing Communications and Public Relations to promote fundraising events and activities including development of appropriate marketing materials. Ensure messaging is consistent across all channels.
  • Stay abreast of emerging fundraising trends to improve HSNTs effectiveness in saving the lives of pets and accomplishing its mission
  • Recruit train and motivate staff. Provide appropriate recognition and disciplinary actions

Knowledge Skill and Abilities Needed to Perform the Essential Functions of this Position

  • Must embrace the mission of the Humane Society of North Texas
  • Bachelors degree with a minimum of 10 years of experience in major gift fundraising including managing a capital campaign
  • Strong interpersonal and writing skills
  • Proven management and leadership skills
  • Energetic outgoing personality to initiate and follow through on donor visits
  • Ability to represent the Humane Society of North Texas in a professional manner in all situations with the public volunteers staff and the Board of Directors
  • Excellent organizational skills to ensure tasks are completed goals are achieved and timelines are met

Working Conditions

  • The individual performing this job may be required to work more than 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week
  • Participation in events in the evening and on weekends will be required
