JOB TITLE:

Assistant Professor of Practice Stage Management and Production Management

JOB PURPOSE:

The University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance welcomes applications for a fulltime benefited 9month nontenure track Assistant Professor of Practice in Stage Management and Production Management beginning August 2025. We seek a practitioner who will contribute their expertise in collaborative modalities and settings. This individual will have a demonstrated ability to teach and mentor Stage Management productionrelated courses and courses that make up the Theatre and Dance undergraduate core curriculum. As a faculty member in the Design Production and Management Area this individual will support and actively engage in recruitment efforts of prospective Design Production andManagement (DPM) students; mentor DPM students collaborate with DPM faculty and staff on curriculum development and program assessment; provide service to the department college university and State of Wyoming; and support and participate in outreach and inreach activities of the department. Candidates should also be able to engage collaboratively with department members to shape the future of the Department of Theatre and Dance through curriculum development and selfgovernance.

This position supports all major degrees in the department and supports students in their goals to work in the public sector or pursue postgraduate education. In addition to interdisciplinary opportunities UW offers students and faculty alike the support to work closely with the American Heritage Centers archival collection and the Neltje Center for Excellence in Creativity and the Arts.

The UW Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts home to the Department of Theatre and Dance and Department of Music provides generous space for undergraduate scholarship and studio practice. The Theatre and Dance spaces feature a 388seat proscenium theatre 250seat thrust theatre a flexible black box theatre lecture classroom two theatre studios two dance studios musical theatre classroom design studio costume and production shops and storage. The department offers a Bachelor of Art in Theatre and Dance Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre and Dance with concentrations in Acting Performance Dance Dance Science Design Production and Management Musical Theatre Performance and Theatre/English and a variety of related minors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach the management curriculum (currently stage management focused) with other teaching assignments based on department needs and individual experience.
  • Advise and mentor student stage managers and assistant stage managers providing supervision for all stage management teams throughout the production process.
  • Serve as the Department Production Stage Manager participating on all department events and productions with a minimum of 4 main season productions and 1 student production per academic year and oversee the stage management process for the season while stepping into call rehearsal and / or stage manage as needed.
  • Serve as chair of the Production Advisory Committee collaborating with the department head to manage the full department production calendar and budget for all Design Production and Management areas.
  • Oversee all management aspects of production: scheduling and running of design and production meetings; coordinate playbill creation crew view tech and dress rehearsals and production maintenance; and organize strike and postmortem activities.
  • Organize and manage production meetings while guiding student stage managers through their leadership training.
  • Organize and oversee safety training for all stage management and production run crews.
  • Serve as the principal point person for student productions guiding them through the proposal logistics and production process and making sure they are in contact with appropriate faculty and staff and understand the full expectations of the faculty and department.
  • Provide service to the department college and university including serving as Chair of the Departments Production Advisory Committee.
  • Successful candidates must be available willing and able to work evenings and weekends based on the production schedule.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A distinguished professional career with significant positive impact on fields and disciplines that are important to academic programs.
  • Equivalent combination of nonacademic work experience at the regional and/or national level depending on candidates highest education
  • Demonstrated work experience as a Stage Manager Production Manager and/or Company Manager in theatre musical theatre and/or dance.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring and/or managing a team of personnel.
  • Demonstrated stage management experience in educational theatre and/or dance activities at the secondary and/or postsecondary level.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelors Degree in theatre dance performing arts management or related field at the time of appointment and a minimum of 5 years of nonacademic work experience at the regional and/or national level OR a terminal degree within the field with a minimum of 3 years of nonacademic work experience at the regional and/or national level.
  • Teaching and student mentorship experience at the college and/or university level in stage management production management or related disciplines
  • Demonstrated higher education experience as a production stage manager or stage manager in theatre musical theatre and dance
  • Union membership/participation or a professional resume equivalent to the standards set forth by Actors Equity and/or American Guild of Musical Artists or American Guild of Variety Artists
  • CPR/First Aid Certified or the ability and willingness to be certified
