Lead Engineer Energy systems

Location: Aachen/Bonn Germany

About the research and the project:

• In this position you will execute research and development projects to address the modern power grid issues with ever growing DERs EVs and smart loads. The Lead Engineer Energy Systems will report to Regional Team Lead Eaton Research Labs in Aachen/Bonn and help identify key technical gaps and influence technology roadmap for Eatons power systems products and services. This work will help businesses across Eaton solve critical business problems and uncover new business opportunities.

Further goals/responsibilities for this role are:

• Develop implement and demonstrate solutions and technologies for a range of energy system applications including DER management DC Distribution EVCI advanced grid management gridconnectivity and digitalization. The work development of digital twins advanced control optimization and protection algorithms and/or development of realtime simulation frameworks.
• Develop implement and validate flexibility and ancillary services and optimization algorithms for power system operation and planning
• Serve as a technical and/or project lead in technology development and demonstration projects.
• Stay current with the latest research trends and technologies and apply knowledge in scope of governmentally funded projects
• Innovate invent and challenge stateofart design & process by securing critical intellectual properties through patents and publications in high impact peerreviewed journals.

We would like you to bring:

• PhD degree (or PhD candidate close to graduation in Electrical Engineering/Mechanical engineering or related field from an accredited institution. Master degree in Electrical/Mechanical engineering or related field.
• PhD degree plus 3 years of progressive experience in developing and designing technology solutions with a proven track record of developing highquality technology. Masters degree plus 5 years of progressive experience in developing and designing technology solutions with a proven track record of developing highquality technology.
• Demonstrated strong experience in one or more of the following areas: DER/EV management EV charging infrastructure and EVCI integration battery and energy management systems grid automation and control grid reliability and resiliency DC distribution and microgrid control
• Demonstrated strong expertise in integration of generation and storage technologies into demonstration sites
• Demonstrated experience in advanced data analytics and control/reinforcement learning to address the emerging R&D challenges in modern energy systems
• Experience using one or more of power systems simulation software MATLAB / Simulink PSCAD
• Experience in realtime simulations hardwareinthe loop and power hardware in the loop (OpalRT RTDS and/or Typhoon HIL)
• Experience in predictive maintenance algorithms and AI applications for grid and energy management
• Handon experience with field or lab testing of inverters energy storage systems power converters and controllers
• Full working proficiency in English mandatory. Proficiency in German highly desirable.

What skills would be evaluated:

• Experience in implementing communication protocols such as CAN Ethernet TCP/IP MQTT will be a plus.
• Programming skills in Python and C is plus
