Job Description

NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:

The Transportation Supervisor is responsible for the development implementation and oversight of a safe efficient and comprehensive student transportation system. This role ensures all transportation services and programs operate in compliance with District State and Federal regulations. The supervisor serves as a key resource to District personnel the Board of Trustees and external educational entities.

Key responsibilities include directing departmental operations overseeing service maintenance and facilitating the implementation of new programs and processes. The position also encompasses personnel management functions such as hiring training and evaluating staff. The supervisor is accountable for maintaining appropriate staffing levels and ensuring that transportation objectives are met within budgetary constraints while aligning with the Districts overall goals.

This job reports to Associate Superintendent of Instructional Support.

JOBFUNCTIONS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Communicates with internal and external stakeholders (e.g. administrators staff parents state/federal agencies) to resolve transportationrelated issues.
  2. Represents the district in meetings and collaborative efforts to ensure alignment with district goals and compliance requirements.
  3. Responds to sensitive inquiries and concerns ensuring timely and appropriate resolutions.
  4. Fosters a collaborative accountable work environment by building strong respectful relationships with all departmental stakeholders.
  5. Develops and implements short and longterm transportation plans policies and procedures to meet operational safety and compliance goals.
  6. Directs the design and coordination of bus routes schedules staffing and environmental health and safety programs.
  7. Oversees the daily operations of the transportation department including vehicle dispatch routing and maintenance.
  8. Ensures efficient and safe transport services that align with district objectives and timelines.
  9. Hires trains evaluates schedules and supervises transportation staff to ensure effective operations and compliance.
  10. Provides professional development coaching and administrative support to maximize staff productivity and service quality.
  11. Ensures compliance with all local state and federal regulations concerning transportation and safety.
  12. Conducts and oversees fleet inspections safety audits accident investigations and loss control activities.
  13. Identifies risks and develops action plans to maintain the safety and welfare of students staff and the community.
  14. Maintains records prepares reports and presents information related to transportation services budgets policies and compliance.
  15. Analyzes data to improve operational efficiency ensure accountability and support decisionmaking.
  16. Develops and monitors budgets manages fund balances and ensures fiscal activities align with district policies.
  17. Researches financial trends funding sources and expenditures to recommend cost effective solutions.
  18. Interprets and communicates policies and procedures to ensure understanding and compliance across the department.
  19. Serves as a resource for information related to transportation laws regulations and district practices.
  20. Maintains accurate confidential records (e.g. personnel files incident reports) in accordance with regulatory and district guidelines.
  21. Ensures documentation supports audits compliance and ongoing operational needs.
  22. Stays current on industry trends laws and best practices.
  23. Recommends and implements changes to enhance transportation efficiency safety and service delivery.
  24. Collaborates in the planning and of the districts operational response to inclement weather events ensuring student and staff safety while maintaining transportation efficiency.
  25. Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of local and regional transportation infrastructure including city streets county roads and state highways to support effective route planning and emergency decisionmaking.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Demonstrated proficiency in management supervision teambuilding and strategic problemsolving.
  2. Strong leadership capabilities with a proven ability to cultivate a positive collaborative and productive work environment.
  3. Understanding of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and their application to specialized student transportation plans.
  4. Ability to interpret follow and successfully execute both written and verbal instructions with accuracy and efficiency.
  5. Excellent verbal communication skills including the ability to speak clearly and convey information in a constructive and professional manner throughout the workday.
  6. Exhibits sound judgment professionalism and discretion in all interactions and decision making processes.
  7. Demonstrates proficiency in technical writing in order to effectively communicate for the purpose of documenting activities and issues meeting compliance requirements and/or providing supporting materials for requested actions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  1. A significant portion of the role involves administrative tasks such as planning routes managing budgets handling compliance documentation communicating with staff and stakeholders and analyzing data.
  2. Regular visits to the bus yard and maintenance facilities are common to inspect fleet conditions meet with drivers and mechanics and observe daily operations.
  3. Ride along on routes or visit schools to assess transportation logistics and safety.
  4. The director may be required to respond to emergencies (e.g. accidents weatherrelated delays) at any hour.
  5. Crisis management and quick decisionmaking in real time are key aspects of the role.
  6. Works closely with school administrators and special education staff to coordinate transportation for general and special needs students.
  7. Occasionally attends school site meetings or districtlevel planning sessions.
  8. Participates in interdepartmental meetings with HR finance special education and school leadership teams.
  9. May attend school board meetings or state transportation conferences.
  10. Must follow a flexible fulltime schedule. Management team is required to cover early mornings evenings and weekendsespecially during the school year or in response to urgent issues.

EXPERIENCE: Job related experience managing and supervising staff is required. Knowledge of and/or experience in transportation systems and associated software preferred.

EDUCATION: Targeted jobrelated education with study in jobrelated area. Formal training in supervision is preferred. Postsecondary education preferred.

CERTIFICATES/LICENSES: Valid CDL Drivers License and Evidence of Insurability

CLEARANCES: Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance

FLSA Status: Exempt
