The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking to fill three Highway Maintenance Worker 2 positions in Union Gap WA. This is an intraining opportunity that offers a career path handson learning and mentorship and allows you to progress upward through the Highway Maintenance Worker series and achieve the goal class of a Highway Maintenance Worker 2. The selected candidates will assist with the areas maintenance and repair of the state highways and highway structures to ensure the traveling publics safety. These journey level positions will serve as members of the regional maintenance organization and will perform asphalt and concrete maintenance traffic control repair and installation of guardrail and signs as well as culvert and drainage maintenance. Working in the maintenance area requires responsible safetyminded individuals to perform a variety of skilled labor tasks and operate highway equipment and tools. These opportunities are perfect for someone who enjoys working with their hands knowing their work is done on roadways and in a variety of weather conditions.


What to Expect

These positions perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors often next to highvolume highspeed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. A typical schedule is Monday through Thursday 40hours per week for 4 10hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to nonscheduled or callout emergencies. Occasional callout/callback for overtime required.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role theHighway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Perform general roadway maintenance and repair activities such as:
    • Asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair.
    • Drainage maintenance including catch basins sedimentation facilities and ditches.
    • Erosion and slide repair.
    • Sign maintenance and repair.
    • Guardrail fence and impact attenuator installation and repair.
  • Vegetation control such as mowing or spraying.
  • Highway debris removal including danger tree removal.
  • Safely operate Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A B and C equipment for maintenance operations.
  • Perform winter snow and ice removal which includes operating dump trucks and sanders as well has hauling sand and gravel.
  • Design and setup of traffic control which includes manually flagging traffic or signing for lane closures and operating attenuator/buffer truck.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools which includes sharpening power saws and chains washing vehicles and greasing tools and equipment etc.
  • Lead and train others in the absence of the Highway Maintenance Worker 3.
  • Effectively use radio phone computers and electronic devices to communicate and document data.
  • Negotiate rough and steep surfaces during the performance of job tasks.
  • Respond to call out emergencys day night weekends and holidays as needed.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 level the following are required:

  • Experience performing roadway maintenance logging farming excavation or heavy equipment operation.
  • Washington Class B CDL and a current medical card. (Must obtain CDL Class A within 12 months of hire; Agency will assist with training for this license.


To be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 level the following are required:

  • Two 2 years of experience performing roadway maintenance farming excavation construction heavy equipment operation or equivalent.
  • Class A CDL with N endorsement and a current medical card.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to operate a computer iPad and other electronic equipment for maintenance accountability timekeeping and checking emails.


In addition the following are required:

  • The ability to transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • The ability to respond to emergency call outs work different and/or extended shifts on short notice (days nights and weekends) and perform standby duty.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station for an afterhours call.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions confined spaces uneven terrain and next to fast high volume highway traffic.
  • Ability to traverse steep rough and uneven terrain; work at heights above 25ft over land or water; work in heat and around hot asphalt.
  • Ability to operate Class A B and C equipment w/current technology in highway maintenance operations.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • High school diploma or a GED certificate or equivalent.
  • Traffic Control/ Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning setting signs and cones or barrels and flagging.
