Consultant Breast Radiologist

About the trust

With a workforce of over 7500 staff we are one of the largest acute Trusts in the region providing healthcare services to a population of around 750000 people with the number expected to grow in the coming years. Our services include all major specialties and we operate from two main hospital sites with a range of outpatient services and community diagnostic centres. They are also proud of our Cancer Centre Stroke Unit and Neurosciences Centre which are central to our efforts in delivering excellence in patient care.

Job Summary

An exciting new opportunity has been created for a Consultant Breast Radiologist to join an expanding team. This is a 12month fixedterm post that arises from increasing demand for breast radiology services as part of their ongoing transformation and service expansion.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing both breast radiology and general radiology services working closely with existing specialist colleagues. Weekly Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings are held which will also serve as an educational resource for trainees and allied health professionals. The role includes contributing to specialist MDTs sharing oncall commitments and providing support across various hospital sites.

Radiology Department

The Radiology department is large and busy with 40 Radiologists and a growing number of diagnostic services. The department operates across multiple sites including community diagnostic centres and undertakes a significant number of CT MRI and ultrasound procedures each year. In response to growing demand substantial investments have been made in upgrading imaging equipment including new CT and MRI scanners along with stateoftheart biplane theatres.

They provide a comprehensive breast service across several sites serving a population of approximately 800000. The service includes symptomatic care screening riskrelated services and reconstructive surgery. The breast care service operates as a part of the North East London Cancer Network and the London Cancer pathway with close to 500 cancers treated annually and a third of those detected through the local breast screening service. We also manage significant numbers of symptomatic referrals and are always striving to adopt new technologies and remain at the forefront of breast cancer care.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Consultant Breast Radiologist will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive breast and general radiology services across all Trust sites.
  • Participate in and lead symptomatic onestop breast clinics preoperative wire localisations and breast biopsy clinics (both USguided and mammography/stereoguided).
  • Report on breast MRIs and crosssectional images including CT and MRI scans performed at both the main hospitals and community diagnostic centres.
  • Contribute to the general duty roster providing hot reporting and urgent imaging services.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs) focused on breast care and general radiology services working in rotation with other consultant radiologists.
  • Share oncall duties with other radiologists with a 1:11 rota ensuring adequate coverage for urgent cases across both hospital sites.
  • Work across multiple sites as required including King George Hospital and Queens Hospital.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Clinical Governance and Quality Standards: The post holder will participate in departmental governance activities including audits incident investigations and meetings to ensure adherence to clinical standards and continuous improvement in service delivery.
  • Teaching and Education: The post holder will contribute to the education and training of junior radiologists and other healthcare professionals. There will be opportunities for mentorship and supervision as well as involvement in teaching during MDTs and clinical meetings.
  • Research and Development: The Trust encourages involvement in research and the post holder will be supported if they wish to pursue further research opportunities related to breast radiology or other areas of interest.
  • Professional Development: The post holder will be expected to keep uptodate with developments in breast radiology attending relevant CPD sessions and ensuring that professional skills and knowledge are maintained to a high standard.

Job Plan

A formal job plan will be agreed with the Clinical Director and it will be reviewed annually. The role includes a total of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) broken down as follows:

  • Direct Clinical Care (DCC): 8.5 PAs which includes regular clinical duties and oncall commitments.
  • Supporting Professional Activities (SPA): 1.5 PAs which include activities like clinical governance audit teaching and research.

  • Monday:

    • 9:00am 1:00pm: OneStop Breast Clinic
    • 1:00pm 5:00pm: Reporting (CT/MRI/General Radiology) & MDT
  • Tuesday:

    • 11:00am 1:00pm: Reporting (CT/MRI)
    • 1:00pm 5:00pm: SPA
  • Wednesday:

    • 9:00am 1:00pm: Reporting (CT/MRI & Breast Session)
    • 1:00pm 5:00pm: MDT Preparation & General Reporting
  • Thursday:

    • 8:00am 11:00am: MDT/Clinic/Biopsy
    • 11:00am 1:00pm: SPA
  • Friday:

    • 8:00am 1:00pm: Wires & Breast Clinic
    • 1:00pm 5:00pm: Breast Biopsy

Essential and Desirable Criteria

Essential:

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • FRCR (or equivalent)
  • Experience in triple assessment for breast clinics
  • Competency in ultrasound and stereoguided breast biopsy procedures
  • Competency in preoperative wire localisation of breast lesions
  • Involvement in clinical audit and teaching

Desirable:

  • Possession of CCT in Radiology
  • On the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of entry at the time of interview)
  • Publications in relevant peerreviewed journals
