POSITION OBJECTIVE: Incumbents perform high school athletic grounds maintenance. The position is a nonsupervisory position and distinguished from the Groundskeeper position by the experience depth of high school athletics knowledge ability to work independently without close supervision as well as certification requirements.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.
high school athletic grounds keeping duties such as policing athletic fields / facilities cleaning and maintaining surrounding facilities to ensure areas are safe litter free and clean.
2. Performs trash pickup raking shrub and tree pruning planting trimming fertilizing and general upkeep of the high school athletic fields and facilities.
3. Checks irrigation systems for proper watering schedule; installs maintains and repairs irrigation system lines heads and controllers; troubleshoots controllers and electrical problems; minor repairs; and assists in inspection of contractor projects.
4. Preps baseball softball football soccer and track & field facilities; maintains all athletic sports surfaces and running areas to achieve optimum playing conditions.
5. Uses a variety of hand tools operates an EZGO cart and drives District vehicles.
6. Performs as a team player that works and communicates effectively with high school coaches athletic director and maintenance staff. Maintains a detailed written log of activities performed and the amount of time spent on each activity.
7. Works independently with little or no immediate supervision and makes proper decisions using sound judgment.
8. Calibrates seed and fertilizers to uniformly plant seed or fertilize turf; calibrate and apply correctly liquid fertilizer and herbicides.
9. Plants and prunes trees and shrubs utilizing proper methods according to Arizona Landscape Professional Standards.
10. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: (positions in this class typically require):
Any combination of training education or experience equivalent to one 1 year experience at the Maintenance worker I level or grounds maintenance experience.

An Arizona pest Control Applicator certification possessing both turf and ornamental status and control (E and F) may be required for some positions in this classification. If this certification is deemed necessary applicants must possess or obtain this certification within the first six months of hire. In addition must possess or obtain within one year of hire one or more of the five following certifications: Certified Landscape Auditor. Professional Ground Certification Arizona Certified Professional District CalSense Controller/Water Management. Training or completion of Extension Turf Grass Certification from University

SKILLS:
Skills in:
Calibrate spreaders for application of liquid and granular fertilizer herbicides and warm and cool season grass seed.
Plant and prune trees and shrubs according to Arizona Landscape Professional standards.
Follow department policies and procedures; safety procedures and practices; traffic control methods.
Learn understand and operate the Districts CalSense Irrigation System. Perform sprinkler maintenance; repair lines heads.
Operate all related landscape maintenance equipment including chain saws and other equipment weighing up to 80 lbs.
Operate a personal computer to check email.
Safely operate EZGo cart and drive District vehicles.
Lift empty and carry trash bags or cans weighing approximately 50 lbs.
Operate telephone and radio communications equipment properly.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers supervisors other departments and school staff.
Demonstrate the willingness to assume ownership in completion of assigned tasks.
Complete work orders and safety checklists in a complete and readable manner.
Maintain regular consistent attendance and punctuality.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: reaching standing walking finger dexterity grasping talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts electrical currents vibrations fumes odors dusts gases chemicals oils extreme temperatures inadequate lighting and intense noises.
