Carers NSW is the peak nongovernment organisation for carers in NSW part of the National Carer Network and a member of Carers Australia. The organisation has an exclusive focus on supporting and advocating for all carers regardless of their age location lifestage or circumstances. This includes those caring for family members and/or friends who may be living with disability mental illness health related and/or chronic conditions drug and alcohol related issues and those who may be frail due to ageing.
Carers NSW is a notforprofit registered charity and company limited by guarantee. The organisation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors in accordance with the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and the Australian Charities and Notforprofits Commission Act 2012 (Cth). The Board oversees the activities of Carers NSW and draws on the expertise and insights of Directors to achieve its strategic priorities.
Carers NSW is seeking applications from individuals who have a commitment to excellence and a desire to contribute to effective governance. Successful applicants will bring alignment with the purpose of the organisation and have capacity to devote time and energy to the position of a Board Director.
Board Activities
Board activities include strategic planning Board development and reviewing financial planning and performance. Meetings are held at least six times a year on the last Thursday of every second month and usually last from three to four hours. In addition Board workshops may be scheduled from time to time as required. There is also the opportunity for Directors to serve on Board committees and working groups.
Directors are appointed as individuals not as nominees or representatives of organisations or a particular sector. They are not remunerated but their reasonable expenses may be covered.
Eligibility Criteria
The Carers NSW Board has determined that applications to fill the Appointed Director vacancies for 2025 must meet:
one or more of the following Eligibility Criteria:
demonstrated experience in academic policy development and research within the
human services and/or notforprofit sector
experience in Technology/Technology Consulting at a Senior/Executive level
a record of participation in the nongovernment and/or human service sectors at a leadership level or above
possess one or more of the following general skills competencies and/or experience:
lived experience and/or representative of the following demographic groups; carers live rurally/regionally Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders young person 1825 years) or from a culturally and linguistically diverse background
leadership vision and ability to champion Carers NSWs vision
an understanding of the principles and practices of effective corporate governance including strategic planning and direction setting
sound understanding of accounting and finance
experience in developing strategy and building new revenue sources
experience in building partnerships both corporate and government
In addition to these specific Eligibility Criteria an applicant is eligible for appointment who:
1. is at least 18 years of age
2. is not bankrupt or in financial insolvency
3. is not an employee of or in receipt of fees from Carers NSW
4. has not been convicted of an offence involving fraud or dishonesty as per section 46.1(i) of the Carers NSW Constitution and
5. is not ineligible to be a Director under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) or the Australian Charities and Notforprofits Commission Act 2012 (Cth).
Eligible applicants will also be required to undertake a satisfactory National Police Check Working with Children Check and hold a current Director ID.
