Job Description

TITLE: Director of Early Childhood

LOCATION: Central Office and Training Center


The Kansas City Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22000 students and 60 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.


With Head Start/preschools 28 elementary schools 7 middle schools and 5 college and career academies/high schools we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56 Hispanic 24 African American 9 White and 6 Asian. To serve our students the district employs approximately 4000 employees including more than 1800 teachers.

JOB GOAL:The Director of Early Childhood will report to the Executive Director of Early Childhood and support the administration of the Early Childhood program in accordance with all grant and district guidelines and policies. This role will supervise the Early Childhood Principals. Additionally the Director will engage with the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) and other state leadership to ensure compliance with grant funding requirements. They will also work with the Head Start team to ensure all Head Start Performance Standards are met.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide leadership and support to the early childhood department and schools assisting the Executive Director in all related functions.
  • Supervise early childhood principals and other staff as assigned.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with grants and district policies across all areas of Early Childhood
  • Oversee coordination of district services for young children with early childhood special education services.
  • Applies current research and techniques to ensure that all individuals with exceptional needs are appropriately identified assessed and provided appropriate education programs and services designed to meet their unique needs.
  • Oversee coordination with elementary education in the district to ensure a smooth transition for children from early childhood to kindergarten.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with grants and district policies throughout the early childhood program.
  • Oversee implementation of appropriate staff development and staff evaluation procedures necessary to ensure quality services for young children.
  • Work closely with elementary personnel and administrators to periodically review curriculum to ensure continuity between early childhood and kindergarten.
  • Prepare and submit state and federal reports as required by grant funding.
  • Oversee the completion of required screenings and assessments for early childhood/kindergarten readiness
  • Attend meetings as required by grant requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Early Childhood.

QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Masters degree in School Leadership Early Childhood Education or a related field is required
    • Holds a School Leadership License
    • Experience as a building principal (minimum 3 years required) at the early childhood level or at the elementary level if supervising early childhood classrooms
    • Head Start experience required
    • Early Childhood Special Education experience preferred
    • Demonstrated ability to work with adults and young children
    • Experience writing grants
    • Excellent organization and planning skills
    • Excellent communication skills

COMMUNICATION/ ORGANIZATION:

Maintain effective working relationships with district staff students parents and the community. Possess the ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication to enhance cooperative action to meet the educational needs of students.

REASONING ABILITY:

Must have the ability to perform single technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skillbased competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

LANGUAGE AND MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to read analyze and interpret general educational reports professional journals technical procedures and regulations. Ability to perform basic math including calculations using fractions percents and/or ratios; understand written procedures write routine documents and speak clearly; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include pertinent codes policies regulations and/or laws; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; computer operations and management information systems.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to: occasional lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling some climbing and balancing some stooping kneeling crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50 sitting 25 walking and 25 standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision and depth perception.

REPORT TO: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF EARLY CHILDHOOD

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated by the immediate supervisor in accordance with the Board of Education Policy.
