JOB SUMMARY

The Department Chemistry and Biochemistry at California State University San Bernardino is seeking parttime graduate student applications from a diverse group of qualified individuals for both our San Bernardino Campus (SBC) as well as our Palm Desert Campus (PDC). The department is seeking experienced wellorganized and studentcentered individuals to teach in any of our subject areas: General Chemistry Biochemistry Organic Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry. Candidates in this position will be tasked with teaching labs or discussions which are foundational level courses while maintaining an active dialogue with the coordinator. Candidates should demonstrate their ability to interact and work effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students including firstgeneration college students. Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative supportive and inclusive environment. Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who have professional capabilities.

Workload can be as little as one course up to a maximum of 15 WTU.

This is a pool of graduate students for the department to draw on as necessary and all appointments are temporary. Staffing decisions are made on a rolling basis typically beginning a few months prior to the start of an academic term right up to the beginning of the academic term. We recommend submitting your application at least 4 months before the beginning of an academic term to be considered for available positions.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Chemistry Biochemistry Organic or Analytical Chemistry and have a command of the subject matter.

Typical activities include inspecting lab for safety and preparations issues perform experiments indicated in lab manuals/textbooks maintain student attendance maintain regular communication with laboratory and recitation coordinator maintain scheduled office hours outside of scheduled teaching times meeting lab coordinator and lecture instructors expectations for grading including: returning graded work promptly record grades regularly in Canvas and turn in final lab grades by last day of final exams

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be classified students in a Masters Program in Chemistry or a related field and have one semester of graduate course work. Students may not be considered if they are in probationary status or have any outstanding incomplete grades

In case of teaching activities classes candidate must have a strong command of the subject matter course design/preparation instructional material and organization

  Evidence of scholarly activity publication and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduatelevel teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry prides itself on the quality of the instruction it provides and the personal attention given to its students. Most classesare deliberately kept to a moderate size so students can better interact with the instructor. General chemistry lecture classes are usually capped at 96 while upper division classes are anywhere between 1072 students. Laboratory classes are typically 24 for general chemistry and 1620 or less for most upper division classes. The upper division labs are mostly taught by permanent faculty and the lower division laboratories are mostly taught by the parttime lecturers and a few teaching associates from the MSES program. Good advice is considered a key aspect to academic progress at CSUSB and chemistry faculty advisors are available for consultation. Each student majoring in chemistry or biochemistry will be required to see an advisor at least once each year to ensure they are on track for graduation.

The Department also features stateoftheindustry laboratory equipment and instrumentation. Laboratory bench experience includes ready access to computers for simulation and recording purposes. There are laboratory areas dedicated for laboratory courses as well as research activities.
