Job Description

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Long Beach seeks a creative energetic individual to lead and grow a dynamic music program for a 230 member congregation to start May 1 2025. The Director of Music must be a skilled choral musician who can develop our UUCLB choir to help create worship that is spiritually powerful and emotionally moving. The DOM works collaboratively with the Minister and lay leaders to plan music for Sunday morning worship and other congregational events. The Director of Music will work to build the musical skills of the congregation by integrating new talent new programs and new forms of music into the existing music program. The DOM manages a budget that provides for guest and substitute musicians sheet music purchases and maintenance and acquisition of musical instruments.

This is a part time 20hour a week yearround position. Wednesday hours are required onsite or online for weekly staff meetings and onsite for rehearsals 69 pm). Sunday morning hours are required for Sunday services 8:30 am11:30 am. The position shall include paid time off health retirement and other benefits in accordance with the UUCLB Employee Handbook.

Principal Duty:
The Director of Music (DOM) is the primary director for church musical activities. The DOM supports the mission of the church by planning managing and implementing the churchs music program. The DOM provides overall direction of the churchs musicinworship program contributing to dynamic engaging and inspirational worship 52 Sundays a year. The Director of Music serves UUCLBs 8th principle commitment to building a multicultural multigenerational spiritual community.


Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

Demonstrated ability to provide effective leadership and direction of a comprehensive highquality musical program

Professionally competent as a pianist vocalist and choir director

Demonstrated leadership interpersonal and communication skills

Knowledge and appreciation of UnitarianUniversalism and the application of the values of a liberal church in a variety of worship services.

Knowledge and appreciation of traditional and contemporary music both sacred and secular including folk gospel pop and classical.

Willingness to teach learn and grow
