The Musicology Department of the School of Music Theatre & Dance at the University of Michigan invites applications to fill a fulltime fouryear term limited position at the rank of Assistant Professor starting in August 2025. We seek a dynamic teacher and promising scholar
who is dedicated to original compelling and intellectually probing research centered on US American art and popular music and whose interests complement and expand existing departmental strengths. Our ideal candidate will be a specialist in US American music broadly defined to encompass the historical and contemporary study of music including vernacular and popular genres. We encourage applicants whose areas of expertise span the history of US music to the present day as well as those whose work centers on film and other media to apply. We seek a teacher with a proven ability to empower advocate for and value a diverse range of students with different identities and experiences who are pursuing varied careers in music and musicology. Collaboration is a fundamental pillar of our departments culture and we wish to
welcome a new colleague who is enthusiastic about contributing through their research teaching and service to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.
Duties: Teach musicology courses at the undergraduate masters and doctoral levels with a focus on US American music which includes a large enrollment course on popular music. The successful candidate will teach two courses per semester and pursue significant scholarly research and musicological publications centered on US American music. Responsibilities also include advising and mentoring musicology students and participating in departmental service as required. The appointee must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence across all levels of the curriculum and be able to teach a diverse range of students from various backgrounds who are exploring a variety of educational opportunities and career paths. Additionally the successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a visible national and international profile as a music scholar. Involvement in departmental committees and contributions to initiatives at the department that promote diversity inclusion and equity in higher education are also expected.
Required: Ph.D. in musicology in hand; specialization in any aspect of US American Music and the ability to teach popular music; evidence of scholarly promise; demonstrated experience as an innovative classroom teacher; demonstrated ability to empoweradvocate for and value a broad range of students of diverse identities and experiences as shown through pedagogy mentoring and related activities.
Preferred: Applicants engaged in innovative projects centered on US American music history popular music and/or film music and music and media are encouraged to apply.
