Responsibilities

Exciting and interesting technical challenges await when you join a worldclass research team dedicated to reducing the impact of natural hazards. FM helps clients maintain continuity in their business operations by drawing upon stateoftheart engineering and research.

The Climate Risk & Resilience Team at FM is seeking a creative selfmotivated individual for an internship in Norwood MA. The intern will work under the supervision of senior staff and will have the opportunity to tackle realworld science and engineering challenges in the insurance industry. The project involves:

  • Cleaning past tornado loss data
  • Linking these losses to known tornadoes and tornado outbreak events
  • Collecting available engineering information related to the losses
  • Creating a searchable GIS database

The internship is planned to last 3 to 6 months. By the end of the internship the intern will gain experience in

  • Tornado research
  • Insurance losses
  • Wind engineering

Qualifications

We are looking for undergraduate students in good academic standing who wish to expand their research experience beyond academia. Ideal candidates will have:

  • Attention to detail
  • Strong analytical skills
  • GIS skills (e.g. ArcGIS QGIS GDAL)
  • Experience with programming languages such as MATLAB R Python and FORTRAN
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort with writing shell scripts and using APIs to automate workflows
  • Familiarity with both Microsoft Windows and Linux environments

This is an inoffice role based in Norwood MA. Temporary relocation support provided for selected qualified candidate.
