Description

The School of Social Work and Human Service (Faculty of Education and Social Work) at Thompson Rivers University invites applications for a sessional lecturer to teach the course SOCW 4800: International Social Work 3.0.0 in Fall 2024. This course is delivered face to face in person at the Kamloops campus.

SOCW 4800 Calendar Description

Students are introduced to the field of international social work. Current global social welfare issues and challenges are critically explored and discussed including global Indigenous issues and development approaches of different countries. Students complete an indepth examination of the economic political social and cultural dimensions of globalization. Implications for international social work and its social justice and antioppressive mandate are analyzed by addressing complex global issues such as disaster relief and humanitarian aid human trafficking and forced migration of people. The impact of political social economic cultural religious and environmental influences on human rights social and economic justice social policies and service delivery are explored. The role of social work in facilitating international social development is examined in local and global contexts.

Educational Objectives/Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe the international dimensions of social work and the connections between the local and global.
  2. Identify the contemporary international issues and their implications for social work and of competing perspectives on globalization.
  3. Describe and incorporate theoretical perspectives of race space nation and citizenship into the current discourse of international social work.
  4. Describe and analyze the global Indigenous perspectives and the functions and contributions of social work in various regions of the world.
  5. Describe and analyze the complex value and ethical dilemmas inherent in national and international social work practice.

THE TRU SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK AND HUMAN SERVICE

The School of Social Work and Human Service offers a wide range of academic programs to approximately 250 students on two campuses and more than 100 students through Open Learning. Programs include: Bachelor of Social Work Degree the Human Service Diploma Education Assistant and Community Support Certificate (offered at both the Kamloops and Williams Lake campuses) the Social Service Worker Certificate (offered through Open Learning) and the Human Service Diploma (offered through Open Learning). The School also has plans to offer a Master of Social Work degree.

Requirements

Education and Practice Experience:

  • A Masters degree in Social Work is required while an earned Doctorate in a relevant field in addition to a graduate credential in Social Work is preferred.
  • Successful teaching experience in postsecondary institutions preferred.
  • A minimum of five years professional experience working in a social work capacity is required. Experience with international human service work preferred.

Professional Qualities:

  • An ability to demonstrate experience integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62 is required.
  • Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding empathy and mutual respect (TRC CA 63 is required.
  • Teaching excellence including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10 is required.
  • Candidates must provide evidence of their ability to commit to creating time and space for relationships based on respect as human beings supporting and embracing differences with kindness love and respect (NIMMIWG 15.7.
