GE Vernovas Advanced Research Center is the central innovation engine for GE Vernovas energy businesses. With over 300 researchers across various disciplines we are driving initiatives to help decarbonize power accelerate renewables and promote electrification for a future with less carbon emissions.
We are seeking an Intellectual Property (IP) Engineer to join our team with a focus on technologies related to Gas Power. This role requires a combination of strong technical expertise in the field of gas power engineering and intellectual property acumen. You will partner closely with engineers legal teams and patent attorneys to identify protect and strategically manage intellectual property ensuring alignment with business goals and technology roadmaps.

Roles and Responsibilities
- Perform patentability and invalidity searches to support invention evaluations and patent prosecution.
- Conduct freedomtooperate (FTO) analyses and prepare summaries in coordination with the legal team.
- Collaborate with legal teams and outside counsel to review and finalize patent language ensuring alignment with GE Vernovas business interests.
- Support patent prosecution activities.
- Mentor and encourage engineers through the IP submission process and driving highquality invention disclosures.
- Attend and contribute to Patent Review Boards working with patent attorneys and technologists to shape filings for maximum business benefit.
- Develop patent landscapes in targeted technical domains to identify trends white space etc
- Collaborate with technologists patent attorneys licensing professionals and business development teams to support IP strategy and monetization efforts.
Required Qualifications
- Masters or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline with a strong foundation in energy systems.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in technology R&D patent engineering or IP analysis preferably in the energy or industrial sector with a broad understanding of Gas Power technologies including gas turbines combustion systems turbomachinery heat recovery systems and balanceofplant components.
- Experience supporting new product introduction (NPI) or R&D programs in heavy industry or energy sectors.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct prior art FTO and IP landscape analysis.
- Familiarity with patent databases and tools such as Derwent Orbit Patsnap or similar.
- Strong communication analytical and collaboration skills.
Desired Characteristics
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) is preferred.
- Experience in thermal systems gas turbines or combustion technologies.
- Understanding of U.S. and international patent law and the IP lifecycle.
- Familiarity with IP management software tools.
- Exposure to licensing commercialization or strategic IP development.
- Ability to influence and mentor technologists in innovation and IP best practices.
- Knowledge of patent law and intellectual property analysis.
- Basic understanding of financial/accounting concepts and market analysis.
- Proficiency in Excel programming Python and use of AI/ML tools is a plus.
- Excellent articulation and communication skills.
